Case 188b gasoline engine

New to the forms here but I want your guys input, I just bought a case 584 rough terrain forklift with a 188b gasoline engine. The engine is in rough shape and I'd like to either re ring and bearing it or buy a whole rebuild kit. It looks like the diesel kits as long as I get the right size flange on the sleevs they'll possibly fit? Im thinking the main difference would be the pistons between the gasoline and diesel engines? Mainly wondering if anyone has tried putting a diesel rebuild kit in one and if the diesel pistons in the gasoline engine still compresses enough to make alright power or if I should reuse the flat top pistons out of the gasoline engine

Hello Matt, welcome to YT! What advantage do you feel you would get by using diesel parts in a gas engine? That is not really an experiment that will produce good results. It doesn’t seem like overhaul parts for the gas 188 are as readily available as the 188 diesel version, but the 188B diesel was a widely used engine particularly in tractor loader/back hoes. I am sure aftermarket rebuild parts are available with some research, they likely will be a little higher priced.

I do agree that it's not generally a very good idea and I would be the happiest to use the gasoline parts in my gasoline engine but I have been searching and calling around and have not been able to find any gasoline parts besides rings bearings and gaskets. I have a sleeve that is not very good and has a lot of pitting from rust along with that piston not being in so good shape. I'm not sure if the diesel sleeves have the same "crown" that a gasoline sleeve has. Although it does look like they both possibly have the same flange diameter for the sleeve? I do know the diesel pistons wouldn't work well as they do have the bowl in the top of the piston where as the gasoline pistons are flat tops but if it comes down to not being able to find even a salvaged piston I would consider switching all of the pistons over to the diesel style if they would still build enough compression to fire. If you know of anyone selling salvage parts that would have a decent piston and sleeve I'll definitely give that a shot. Although I mainly want to know if the diesel sleeves are the same as from my research it looks like they are the same? But I'm not sure and I don't want to spend money on a rebuild kit if it won't work

Didn’t realize the parts were that scarce for those. Tgrasher is correct, John can probably help you out.

Unfortunately that does seem to be the case with parts for these motors, but I'll definitely give John a call. Thank you guys for the information so far!

The diesel sleeve will fit the gas block but has to be machined so the top is at the correct height and new grooves made for the O rings so they are at the right position. Additionally, the sleeve has to be shortened. Not sure about the piston.
