Case 2290 Stuck In 4th Gear

Just picked up a Case 2290 from my grandpa, ran it 20 miles home with zero issues, runs great and shifted fine. Went to back up to a plow and it worked fine, went to change it a lower gear and must have bumped it into 4th and now it is totally stuck there. Shut the tractor off hoping I could get it out of gear but now it won’t start as it is in gear. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated

Hello Tk…, welcome to YT! Not real familiar with that tractor, worked on some 70 series tractors though. About all I can do is give you some diagrams. In this link go to Category Power Train and Diagram 6-226. Messsicks Case 2290 parts catalog The shifting is done by the levers moving cables, parts 17 are the levers that the cable actuate to move the shifting shafts that go into the transmission. Diagram 6-230 is the rest of the linkage inside the case. Part 13 slides part 27 back and forth to select 3rd or 4th gear. Checking all the items in diagram 226 for problems is what I suggest. Particularly checking what part 17 is doing when someone or moving the lever. Maybe even trying some prying to see if you can get it moving back in the right position. You can jump across the terminals on the starter to restart the tractor. But you need to be warned doing this can be VERY DANGEROUS! Since it is known to be stuck in a gear you need someone in the seat holding the clutch pedal down when you do this. There is a smaller terminal on the starter close to where the battery cable connects to it. Shorting from the battery cable to the small terminal should crank the engine. There is a David Brown and Case forum in the Manufacturers section. If you don’t get any other replies here you might have to post this over there.

Not sure if the 2290 uses cables to change gears or if hard linkage. Should be able to look on the right side and see if everything is hooked up and trying to move.

Is your shift lever in where it should be. Those and 70 series are prone to getting the lever past the the shift wheel rail and still in gear. Take another lever that fits in and put that wheel in neutral. Or pry the two wheels apart and get your lever back into the 4th gear wheel.
The wheel I’m talking about is in the cab where you gear shift is sitting in. Not sure of the technical term but I call it a wheel.

“Not sure of the technical term but I call it a wheel.” He is talking about the “Quadrants” parts 4 and 10 in diagram 226 I linked above. I would have hoped you could tell that had happened.
