CASE 2670 Engine Failure

John Deere D

John Deere D
Good day...
My Neighbor "Karen" has a "problem / challenge / concern"..........
Her Case 2670 Diesel Engine destroyed itself.
She has purchased a ready to install engine, that we off load this morning.
I've been asked to look into and assist her in moving the 2670 back to her home site. We have to tow the 2670 1 3/4 miles .
I have never worked on this model of a machine, however, I'm going to donate several hours of my time, as a Neighbor is a Neighbor.
Concerns that I have...
(1) I believe we should disconnect both the front and rear drive shafts.
(2) It appears to me the Tractor is a hydrostatic steering system, and we shall have NO HYD PRESSURE to steer the machine over the distance.
(3) Are there any of the controls on the DASH or SIDE CONSOLE that must be in a specific setting so as to tow Tractor..

Thanks
Bob...

You DO NOT have to disconnect the drive shafts. Simply put the 4sp selector in neutral. In theory the steering wheel should control the front wheels, when rolling, even with no engine power, but in actuality, I don't know. No "Tow" settings to worry about.

I agree with John below. Put in neutral and go ahead and tow. I moved several dead 4x4 cases a couple hundred feet by loosening up the front hydraulic lines to the steering cylinder. I have thought about hooking up long hydraulic lines to another tractor to steer as it got pulled. Never done it but that's how I would do it for a couple miles. Good luck Nedd

I have hooked up a set of lines to steer them as no way can you steer it well enough by hand,, to much drag on those front tires, I also used a chain with a heavy piece of pipe with the chain ran through and hooks wired so they cannot come unhooked so I can have braking for a tow bar and push them backwards if needed,, But you need to know they steer SUPER FAST with anything more than a few gallon a min going through the lines, you can go from full left to full right in a second,, I used 1/2" hoses as I had them handy, if I needed to do one today I would have a set made up with 1/4 or 3/8" hose max to restrict flow through them and help with the fast steer, tow them slow with the tow unit at a idle to slow down hyd response and it works somewhat better too,, I tied the chain to the frame hole in front of the battery boxes put there for pulling on them when stuck ect
cnt

With tow Tractor attached to the front of the 2670 (3/4" Cable / Bridal), FRONT hydrostatic steering Rams (oil LINES) disconnected from CASE 2670 directional control valve on steering column, and FRONT hydrostatic steering Rams plumbed into TOW TRCTORS REMOTE hydraulic outlets, we tested the arrangement in the field.
It was noted that the operator of the TOW Tractor MUST operate the TOW Tractor's oil supply GENTLY!

The 1 3/4 mile distance to Tow the 2670 was on a Rural Gravel well maintained public road. We had the road as well as intersections blocked off so as to utilize the center of the road.

Fortunately the grade was up hill until we reached my Neighbors residence.
Now for my Neighbor to obtain a Case 2670 SERVICE MANUAL.

Thank you very much to all who answered my original post.

Bob..

Neighbors were ready to remove FAULTY ENGINE.....

Neighbors are to procure a "Dummy Shaft" so as to attach Clutch assembly to flywheel..
Once the Flywheel / Clutch assembly attached....we shall install engine...
