Case 310 track loader information

I've been keeping an eye out for a 310 track loader and one came up for sale this week a couple hours away. It seems these are pretty capable machines given their size and price point. My question is what are the weak points or things to look out for on these machines? Also what would be a decent price for a running unit that is not that great cosmetically? On second note I know there are different letter designations for these. What is the difference between the letter models and how can you tell which is which?

Here is the one I'm looking at. Obviously it needs a gas tank. What do you think?

Thanks,
Lee

Sorry for the slow response, haven't looked in for a while.

Pictured is an early 310G Long Track. Looks to be in half-decent shape. Gas engine? You can fab a new gas tank. This page lists all the 300 Series.

Bring a big pry bar to see how much wiggle you can get on the sprockets, idlers and rollers. Look for loose structural bolts.

New sprockets, rollers and tracks can still be had but not new front idlers.

Clutch or Torque Converter? Looks clutch, might be cheaper to maintain.

I wouldn't know how to price this one without seeing it but considering how much of a money pit they can be, I wouldn't pay much more than a few thousand for it. If you're serious, hiring a real heavy duty mechanic to check it out for you might be a good idea.

I'm afraid to total up my receipts and under-the-table transactions for my 310E but I'll bet I've easily got 40K into it. Mind you it'll outlive me and probably the next guy too.
