Case 310 tranny

I cut my wisdom teeth on a new 1962 case 310 crawler and not all of them in the seat. So I don't remember all the tranny problems I had after all these years, but I do remember that the parts book did not seem to match the actual machine. Has any one here had recent experience rebuilding a 310G tranny so I can help my young neighbor cut his wisdom teeth on his new!! 1967 310G. He needs a new first/reverse main shaft gear that appears to have been put in backwards years ago. The gear is worn out on one end and hardly worn on the other end of the teeth.

If the parts book does not match the machine, I assume you are not looking at the right parts book. There were subtle changes in those transmissions over the years. It is a Clark transmission and near the same as used in the Terratrac and Oliver-Cletrac HG and OC3.

The serial number span on the case construction web site matches this machine , but who knows if it still has the original transmission. I had a brand new 1962 one and the parts book that came with it from the dealer did not match the machine.

Update, I think I figured out why his machine does not match all the parts catalogs. It appears some one put the reverse idler gear in backwards and then in order for it to work they put the first/reverse gear on the main shaft backwards and in front of the spacer. I haven't thought it thru but he probably had reverse's speed in first gear and first gear's ground speed when in reverse.

Has anyone ever tried using a bushing in the reverse idler gear instead of those rinky dinky roller bearings?

I cant help but wonder if the gears were put in backwards so they could avoid replacing the said gears.

Kind of like the act of remounting the rear bull sprocket on the tracks on the other side when it gets worn out.

Thanks, I noticed that part number was the actual bearing number after I left here and did some further research.

Looking at the online parts catalog for the 310 it appears Case part number 84341045 is a substitute for 11450. Have you checked with a Case Construction dealer for both numbers? It appears the 84341045 may be available, not the 11450.

I've tried 84341045 and also 84335837 and found nothing.

Given it is a needle roller bearing that fits inside the reverse idler gear, it may fall in the easiest found at a dealer category. I see a price of about $56. (so $112 +/- for 2) at Messicks. It likely is not used in many common places. I have not found it in a generic cross reference yet.
