Case 310 utility help

Can anyone help me with this question please. I have a 1956 case 310 utility. When I run my tractor for after several hours, I have to constantly keep putting transmission/hydrolic oil in, (on top of the gear shifter housing) to keep the lift working. If I do not the lift will not work because it has got low on fluid. All the transmission/hydrolic oil seems to be leaking from the seal from the lever that activates the PTO on the back of the PTO housing. In other words it is leaking from the base of the lever that you have to reach back and pull straight up on to activate the PTO. My question is: What is causing this? and how do I fix it? Any help Please!!!!!

There are 3 places that will allow oil transfer from front to rear, If you check the level in the rear compartment you will find that it is way overfull. #1 The rockshaft piston seals could be leaking if so equipped and the first clue to that being the case will be the rear hitch arms leaking down indicating damage to the piston seals. #2 the seals in the pto shaft seal retainer that drives on the rear of the sliding gear shaft, in some instances I have seen the retainer actually come off the shaft and work its way back the pto driveshaft allowing oil to come back between the shafts. #3 the shaft seals or oring for the seal carrier on the input shaft to the transmission behind the rangebox. that will require a split to repair if you find that the leakage area. The seal leakage you mentioned on the pto lever is not normal as there is a seal at that point but points to a drastically overfull transmission and differential area. mEl
 
Thanks for the reply. It sounds like it is the rockshaft piston seals as the lift does leak slowly down. Where and how do I go in to the tractor to fix this, what should I look for, and what part numbers and place can I get them?
 

I have a 1956 310 s/n 6052765 that I renewed the piston seals on about 3 years ago. It was configured exactly as depicted in the inset of the pic. My 310 is early 1956 so if you have a later s/n or your piston has been changed out, it may not be the same and may have a different seal arrangement so don"t buy any seals until you eyeball your piston. There are, at least, 3 different pistons and seal a"rrgt that I am aware of.

Case still has seals avail but some p/n's had been changed as noted: V20353 piston o-ring > A30757 and G10941 cover gsk > A152450. G4803 steel piston ring and G15457 cap O-ring had not changed at that time.

A quick dirty, probably forgot something. Remove seat, disconnect oil line, hand lever linkage and the 2 lift links to the draft arms. Unbolt cover, lift entire rock shaft assembly (kinda heavy). Turn over, unbolt cylinder end cover. Tap piston out using a brass rod, wood dowel or similar. Some 300 assemblies do not have the cyl end cover, lift out conn rod, blow piston out with light puff air press on the oil fitting. You can make cover gsk out of bulk if you want but be sure to change it and use sealant, rain water can weep in at the bolts.
