Case 310 utility question Help!

I have 1956 case 310 utility. It has always took 1 gallon of hydro oil every time I use it as it leaks out and I guess goes into transmission. Recently I started using the hand clutch with a bush hog so I could Engage PTO first, then the tractor. I am back to box blading now where I am not using hand clutch and I have left it engaged. Now it is making noise while in gear with foot clutch pushed in and surging forward a little with foot clutch depressed. I can?t even get the transmission gears to stop where I can change gears with clutch pedal all the way depressed. All I get is grinding. Is the Clutch going out? Is it something to do with hand clutch? What could this be? Thanks

Nothing to do with hand clutch. The flywheel clutch stops power to the hand clutch and tranny. My first thought is the throw-out fork is coming apart or the throw-out bearing is bad and wearing thru the pressure plate fingers.
Try adjusting the clutch pedal linkage so the pedal has minimal free travel and see how it works then.

PS-- As far as hydraulic oil consumption to the amount you described, you certainly have to have oil running out of the rear tranny housing somewhere. The usual cause of hydraulic oil migration to the rear end is the 3pt lift cylinder packings.

I agree with Loren, My '56 310 had the same problem with the release fork. Be the first thing I would check. I understand that is a common problem on loader tractors that used this fork.

Your transmission only holds about 16 qts at the full mark. Oil migration like yours has the potential to fill the transmission all the way up to leaking out the breather. Without the air cushion on top of the normal oil level, oil can leak through marginal differential shaft seals and soak your brake discs, also through the inboard axle seals into the housing, doesn't take much pressure buildup. Better keep the oil level drained down some till you can get around to repairs.
