Ok, so I completely rebuilt the engine, installed it, had it running for 5-6 hours, and the thing died out. Turns out that the fuel tank developed some brownish-black sludge that got the first bowl filter clogged. Took it apart, drained the tank, etc.

What is the recommended way to clean the fuel tank? I pulled the fuel lines and pump out, cleaned them, so I want to clean the tank before I just clog it all up again.

Patrick, that sludge could be the result of modern fuel, gasoline with 10%+ ethanol. Ethanol will loosen and dissolve the varnishes deposited after years of non ethanol blended fuels have been in the tank, evaportated out, etc.

Try putting about a gallon or more of laquer thinner in it and letting it set for a while. Throw it in the bed of your pick up and drive around and do some errands and dump it out when you get back. This should help remove what is causing your sludge. Then steam clean it and dry it out.

Then I would seal it with some of the new fuel tank coating products on the market today.
