Case 320 loader/backhoe questions

Hello everyone - New to the forum, and to the Case 320 loader/bh.

I purchased the '58 machine recently, it had been sitting for a few years outside on a farm. Everything seems to work pretty well, starts right up, hydraulics worked fine.

I made a rookie mistake and didn't look at the hydraulic fluid closely, after getting it home and playing with it, i checked the fluid and saw that it pretty milky and needed to be changed. I'm assuming it accumulated a bunch of water while sitting in the elements.

What's the right way to dump this fluid and replace it? I was thinking (read this somewhere) raise the hoe and loader, drain the fluid from reservoir, lower the implements and drain the rest and let it sit overnight. Refill, run till hot and check again. Repeat if necessary. I know that's expensive, but.. the alternative could be much worse. Thoughts on this? (also clean reservoir and filter)

Another question i have is, i bought the 320 service manual however it covers only 210B, 310 tractor/crawler, 430 & 530 CK Forklift, 430 & 530 TLB. I'm guessing the 320 was based on a tractor and case installed a loader/hoe and called it a 320. What tractor model does the 320 use, assuming i'm right about this?

Thanks in advance and glad to be aboard!!

You are on the right track on cleaning up the hyd system, if you have any hyd cylinders leaking externally they will also allow water in,, your machine is built on a three hundred-B utility tractor, it will take some time to get all the water from the system,

To get the ops for your machine you will have to either find a original on line or you can order one from and CASE CE dealer,, cih/cnh dealers can no longer order CE items, but the ops I posted above does have all the correct information for your machine it will not have the loader/backhoe information,, but you already have the SM which will give you about anything you need there Congrats on your purchase they are very tough and mighty machines for their size

Thank you!!! Great info all around. I figured i could get most of the water out in a couple few complete flushes, then go from there. High priority taking care of this issue.

Great info on the 300B! I actually have a reprint of the 320 ops. Looking for a parts manual next..

any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Todd, you need the separate op and parts book for the loader and bucket, Case has several changes in those early years. The Hoe and loader id tags are rivited to the frame of the unit. I've a '59 320B and got all the books off ebay. Drop a note. Larry

I thought I read in my '57 310 manual that you you could flush the hydraulic system with diesel and then fill with hyd fluid. This was for a tractor/skip loader so maybe it's different for the larger hydraulics on a TLB. Would be nice if this is the case, you might be able to run one of the diesel additives to bind the water in the diesel fluid.

Prob want to double check this info though. Your service manual should help out. I think I have a copy of the 530 operators/parts TLB manual if you need. I trolled fleabay until I got my 3 manuals (operator/parts/service) and I think all three are worth it, unless you already know the ins and outs of running the machine.

so far i have the SM for the 300, 400, & 500 series. I also have the operators manual for the 320 (specifically). Looks like i'm on the prowl for the parts manual.

FYI - Dumped all the fluid today. I lifted the FEL and hoe, then drained the reservoir. After the rese drained i dropped the loader and hoe and got a few more gallons out of it.

Pulled the filter, there was some crap on it, but certainly not bad at all. Then cleaned out the reservoir completely. Nice i could get my hand & arm in far enough to do a good job. Put all back together after everything real clean. Will fill with fluid tomorrow.

QUESTION: Is there anything special that needs to happen in terms of priming the pump? i don't think it's self priming, so guessing i'll need to crack open a valve...?

thanks for all the comments and advice!!

Hi - I just purchased a case backhoe and changed majority of the oils but can’t seem to find the filler for the hydraulics. Any ideas and anyone can make out the year and model with the attached image?
