My brother thinks he spotted a mostly complete 351 in a salvage yard. It is a row crop and has an up pointing muffler. Besides serial numbers is there any easy way to tell if it is a 351? If it is, it would seem to be a very rare tractor with only 900 made.

The 351 has a 3 bolt starter and the Eagle Hitch is part of the casting not attached with a steel fabricated mounting.

The 351's had a 2 bolt starter when they left the factory. However, CASE did offer new 164 wet sleeve engines as replacements for the earlier dry sleeve engines, and those may have been with 3 bolt starters. I've never seen any of the 164 wet sleeve engines.

(quoted from post at 18:11:54 12/25/17) were the dry sleeve engines inferior?

I think they were cast in block cylinders. When they wore out the cylinders had to be bored and fitted with oversized pistons.

The following will help you tell the difference between a 300 and 350
The serial tag will have 350 or 351 on it.
350 has a long rectangular water jacket cover behind the manifold.
Starburst wheels were used on the 312 and the 351
The eagle hitch on a 350 has cast brackets for the top link The 312 has fabricated steel top link bracket assembly
The 350 rear end housing is about 1 1/2" wider than a 300/312.
There are many other differences as the 350 is a heavier built tractor.
Good luck,
Nick

Absolutely not. Sweet runners. The 164 was the only dry sleeve engine CASE ever built, and probably the reason for the wet sleeve replacements after 1960 had to do with tooling. Just a guess.

This post hilight's the reason for asking a question on this board. A lot of information comes to light and I live around Sioux City and work there.

Barry, i was from Alton. There were a lot of Case tractors for sale around there as Alton had a good
dealer. We were Oliver folks though. I Always liked the VAC's I saw on area farms and now that I have
one, I am not disappointed.

John, That thing must be quite the performer with the bigger engine. Did you do the engine replacement? Let me understand, the 351 had no sleeves and then would be sleeved during an overhaul, or had thin dry sleeves from the factory? And would the replacement be from the 530 series?
