Case 400 Front Axle Options

Does anyone know why Case changed the drag link/tie rod arrangement on general purpose big 400 tractors? From looking at the parts diagrams, the double drag links behind the axle was used prior to serial number 8069698 (in 1955) for the 53-82 version. Then this width option switched to the single rear drag link with a tie rod in front of the axle. The other width versions in the book all show the front tie rod, with the exception of the high clearance version which evidently retained the two rearward drag links. Protecting the rods behind the axle seems like it would be better, but clearly Case kept with the front rod version for many years so I must be missing something. Cheaper? Better geometry? Tighter turning radius?

I wondered the same thing but then the 70 series went back to two individual tie rods to each wheel. Appears they had it right from the start

wonder the same thing. I have an 800 with 2 tie rods in back. I think I saw some 930 1030 with the wide front reversed and tucked under the tractor with two tie rods.

I'm thinking it was a tighter turning radius. I have a 400 with the 'older' tie rod configuration. I swear it takes half an acre to turn.

My 30 series however, with the 'newer' configuration turn much tighter.

Not sure if this is fact - just what I've experienced.
