case 430 question

Hello, I put a deposit on a case 430 tripple range (actually 440, it's a gasser) and have a few questions...
-can someone tell me what is the purpose of the pedal that's under the brake?
-both brake don't work. The left one is completely loose, no resistance at all, and the right one is stuck solid, impossible to push down. Is that something complicated to fix? how do the brake work on this model?
-how exactly does the 3ph work? The pin (standard size) seems to be very loose on the arm... is that normal?
-how much is the tractor worth? It starts good, but burn oil (blue smoke)
-is the differential supposed to lock?

Looks like your brakes are the same as my Case 530. Block the wheels, then I would crawl underneath and reach up and pull each brake pedal down to see if the linkage is broken or stuck. The rod that extends into the brake housing on each side should move freely. My tractor sat for a year and one of the rods was stuck because the brake shoe linkage had rusted solid. There is a double nut set-up that has to be taken off rod. You can do it before you take brake cover off yet I found it easier to get at once I pulled cover off. The cover for each brake is very easy to unbolt. I sprayed mine with penetrating oil and was able to work it all loose. I can most likely send you a link to a parts exploded diagram or someone here may post it. As for your other issues, my tractor has a backhoe vs a PTO.

Pedal under brake is foot throttle. To activate each brake pedal you need to swing that plate up out of right pedal so you can actuate brake pedals individually.

Fixing stuck brake was easy to do. The loose brake deal is most likely have linkage issue, out of adjustment, or something loosr or broken.

My 530 has no differential lock. You may have a small vertical rod with a knob on it to right of seat coming out of floorboards. It is the parking brake lever. Tilt it forward to lock pedals down as you are pushing pedals down.

Does it burn blue smoke all the time or just on start up? Valve seals worn out cause blue smoke on start up. Burning blue all the time is worn oil rings on pistons. If it has lots of power still yet blows blue all the time indicates worn oil rings and compression rings still good.

If it burns blue all the time and poor power and tires worn out maybe $500 or less? Id suggest you wait for more input from the tractor pros here.

Cariboo is way off on value. As you described that is a 2 grand plus tractor. $500 isn't even scrap value. The sheet metal looks real good, and the tires look to be servicable for some time yet. It is a far better looking tractor than Caraboo's 530
As for the oil burning problem, you will need to do a compression test to see if it has warn out rings or if there is a problem with the valve seals.
the brakes are simple dry disc expansion type. Sounds like the LH has a broken peice of linkage or totally out of adjustment, and the RH pedal has frozen to the shaft and need to be freed up, or someone has tightened the adjustment rod too much.
The pedal by your heel controls the diff lock. Push it down against the spring and when the axle splines line up it will engage. When you release it it will disengage when the axles equalize.
The 3pt is what is known as an eagle hitch. The claw where your implement pin goes, slides forward to an open position so you can back into an implement with the arms below the pin and then raise the open jaw and pull ahead a couple inches and the implement is locked on the tractor. Then just attach the top link. The slop in the claw is normal. Don't worry about it.

The tractor in the picture is just exactly like my first tractor. These tractors came out near 50 years ago , and if it is burning a little oil , no big deal . A ring and valve job will fix that. This is a gas tractor , so there could be some carb. adjustments to make. Might be running to rich , or timing could be out, these could make a tractor smoke and run poor. The eagle hitch arms can get a bit worn, and will jiggle back and forth . This is nothing compared to the swing 3pth arms on other tractors like a Ford 8n or JD.Over all , this is a very fixable user friendly tractor, and you will fall in love with it !

That claw looks broken and worn out to me, what do you think Loren? They are easy to replace and available aftermarket tho.

Jon, Just the top strike pad is broken off the latch. That happened frequently. The small leaf spring is missing also. He can get new ones from John S along with all the engine and other parts he needs. 315-585-9826. Talk to you tomarrow sometime.

Doesn't the hook go all the way around on those like on the larger size tractors? Looks to me like the top of the sliding hook is broke off. Seen that a lot.

I would guess Loren is pretty close, but it depends on where you are at. Probably about a $1250 to $1500 tractor here in Central KS. From the looks of the snow it is not anywhere around here...lol! Different areas command different prices. It would be a handy one for sure. Bob

thanks for your advice.

the foot pedal really seems to be a foot throttle since it goes to the governor. I noticed another problem:

My tractor will not start COLD if I dont shoot a little gas in the spark plug holes.
It starts instantly, and runs very well, my choke is ok, and the carb is ok, it just dosent seem to want to pull the gas up to the heads, not enough vaccum?
Compression test on all cylinders, 135...I dont know what the factory compression should be?

Once warmed up, I always need to pull the choke to get it running again, if left for 5-10 minutes, but no need for the choke if I start up in less than a couple minutes
