case 444

I picked up my case 444 from the shop today, they did a full rebuild on the Kohler 321 bored it over.02 new bearings, valves, piston ect. They also replaced the starter and the battery Afer running it for about 10 minuets I shut it off and got some water, went to start it back up again and the motor will not turn over, like it is stuck. The rebuilder is saying this is normal untill the motor gets broake in??????
Please help should I take it back to him, and what should I tell him

wonderin why its locking up. have seen that happen,then start after engine cools off, aluminum rod was a little tight on the crankshaft. the rod cools off faster than the crank shaft and is then too tight,,but im only guessing on yours. it shouldnt lock up on you.lucas

That happened to me once on an old cast iron briggs. The guy that did the machine work sized the new oversize piston to the cylinder. Every time i started it up it would run for a few minutes and then seize. It would cool down so you could start it. I brought it to a different shop and the guy there said you cant size a piston on an aircooled motor, if it is 10 over you have to cut it 10 over not size it. He did that and I havent had any trouble since.

Ask yourself this. When Kohler made your engine, delivered it to Case and it got sold to the customer, do you think that it seized up after it was shut down?

The "shop" has screwed up. They told you what they did because there's no profit on this job if they have to tear the engine down again and fix the problem. Sure, it's a clearance issue. And they're hoping that shortly the problem will sorta cure itself but at what cost to the components that were not clearanced properly?

Super tight parts don't leave much room for lubricating oil. Think on that one for awhile.

I also hope that a brand spanking new counter-balancer gear was installed because if not, you're going to have new problems shortly.

here is the update, now he wants to put a larger starter in the motor, I am going to print this out and take it to him tomorrow
