Mechanic says 470 bogging down under load is governor problem.

The manual I have does not cover the governor or adjustment/repair.

Any thoughts?

Tractor runs fine in idle or simple driving. when load is added (bush hog, blade and even front end loader) engine strains - spits sputters and then stalls..

replaced
carb (new)
distributor
points
condensor
wires
plugs
rotor

If the engine spits, sputters, and stalls, better check the amount of fuel getting to the carb. Remove the gas line at the carb, and let if flow into a quart jar. It should fill the jar in about one minute. If the governor is not working properly, the engine will come to a gradual stop without spitting or sputtering.

Thanks, will have him check that although he has done quite a bit with the fuel system - he seemed to think it was the governor under load... and was hoping to find out how to adjust it (not in the manual)..

I will call the shop tomorrow

Sounds like you need to adjust the rod from the governor to the carburetor. with the engine stopped, open the throttle lever to full wide open position. Check the clearance at the carburetor arm and wide open stop pin, The clearance here should be 1/16 inch. Shorten or lengthen this rod to get this setting. Easiest to hold the carburetor lever against the pin and adjust the rod till the pin just slips through the hole... Gene

I had a 630 like that when I bought it. Idles like a purring kitten and would spit and stall whenever the throttle was moved, even if only to pull itself across the yard. I had all kinds of fuel and spark and even rebuilt the carb for no reason. Turns out the advance was stuck and not advancing the timing. Don"t know what my mechanic did to free it up but thats what he told me. Now it is a pure pleasure to hear it lean into a load when met with heavy weeds with a rotary mower. Now if I could just get the brakes to work.
