CASE 480B CK TIMING QUESTION

I have a Case 480B CK with the 188 diesel. I had to replace the injection pump, but the bellhousing timing hole is on the bottom, not on top of the starter, like I see pictured on the YOUTUBE videos. And when I look through that hole I see the pin mounted in the bellhousing and just a lot of lines and a number 10 on the last line, nothing else. I'm pretty sure I have her at TDC (both pushrods spin on #1 cylinder) and the dots line up on the camshaft and injection pump gears. Also, I know the videos say to use the 8 degree setting, but my valve cover says to use the 4 degree BTC. Anybody have any info on this?

I have not come across any with either the 4 degrees or the window in the bottom, if the injector pump was removed with the match marks in the pump were lined up that is all that is needed is to put it back, the pump drive shaft is keyed to the gear, if you did not remove the shaft with the pump it can go back in the pump 180 degrees out but then the match marks would not line up, what problems are you having?.

AJ, thanks for the reply. I've had this machine since 1993 and she's always been a quick starter and strong runner. However, one day I parked her (after working her) and the next day she wouldn't start. Long story short, I had a diesel pro come in to assist. He said the injector pump (Moussa) was bad and removed it with the shaft still on the tractor. When I got a new pump he removed the timing cover only to find the woodruff key had sheared. Had he left the injection gear in place I think I could've just installed the new woodruff key mated the shaft to the pump and been running. So my problem is the timing marks on the flywheel and knowing where the 8 degree mark is. All the videos show using the front of the flywheel with clear markings, but all I see is the aft of the flywheel and it's not so clear. I'll try to take some pictures to show my dilemma.

My manual says the 4 degree is for an engine with a 1750 rpm max and the 8 degree is for an engine with a 1850 rpm max.

The 10 stamp would probably mean 10 before TDC so I would go back a quarter turn and bring it back to 2 lines before the 10 stamp which should leave it at 8 before TDC, turn the engine clockwise from the front, match the pump marks and see how you fare.

I sat down and happen to look at the clock and realised I told you wrong, if TDC is 12 O Clock then 8 degrees before is 8 minutes to 12 so pass out the 10 mark by two lines and see if that works.

Update, in the yard I have an old 480 with a Sambron telehandler mounted on it, the timing window with the pointer is at about twenty to on the clock face below the starter which is standard for the 480, I was a bit misled when you said the bottom which to me would be half past six, usually on flywheels that have timing marks they have one offset bolt so the flywheel can only be mounted in one position but with that engine it can be mounted in any position and it needs to be marked before removal so its installed in the same position to suit the application, I could not see the markings on the flywheel as the engine is locked up and it will not turn.

Yes, you are correct on the window placement. It looks like the the pointer is on the 8 degree mark and both pushrods on #1 cylinder pushrods spin, maybe I can just align the timing marks for the cam and injection pump gear, install the pump and gear, align the injection pump marks, and the cross my fingers that it'll start. I'll let you know.
