My Case 530 diesel started running rough for few minutes then died. Cannot get it restarted. Black, tar-like oil in exhaust pipe. Is this a blown head gasket or something more serious? Appreciate any advise.

.. Probably could cure your troubles by changing all the fuel filters ,,..and bleeding the fuel system of air ,,. i learned all this as a 12 yr. old kid in 1968..you got alot to learn , is what my Dad told me back then //. You must not know much about diesels ,,.or equipment in general . .

Thanks but I had just recently changed oil and fuel filers. Bought new battery ($300) and she died half hour later.

Hi:

The "Black, tar-like oil in exhaust pipe." is probably left over diesel mixed with exhaust soot. Not uncommon unless there is lots of it. Usually fixed by working the tractor long and hard.

A diesel not starting usually has 3 possible causes. Lack of fuel as in no fuel entering the injection pump or coming out of the pump. Lack of air as in plugged air supply. Insufficient heat as in cold air or lack of rpm's.

So now is the time to start eliminating things.

Nearly every tractor that has wandered into My barn lot looking for a home had fuel issues ,,. Remove the fuel line in front of filters and turn on the tank valve spigot .. Lots of trash will gather in that valve , If its stopped up You can blow it out, but you will be recirculating the trash . ,,. It is best to remove the fuel and clean the valve ,I used to carry a bicycle pump on my 1070 that had a fungus in the tank ,.. Napa has fuel treatments for such problems .Also some 530s have a steel water trap under the tank open the valve and drain the water ,,. , i would do this every tank full and at least once a month , condensation ,. if nothing will come out . remove valve . so a small wire might open it up . better be quick with putting the valve back in threads.. Keep in mind that you will have to bleed the system in order to start ,. avoid ether,.,. If you pour a quart of hydraulic oil in the tank it will clean the system . report back , ok

Thanks for advise, however I had previously drained tank and blown out all fuel lines replaced fuel filters. Tractor ran Ok for couple days, then started sputtering and then just quit. Opened top hood and discovered black tar' in exhaust. Can't restart even with ether. Exhaust pipe coated with tar' all the way to top (looks like creosote in a wood stove chimney). I am thinking either head gasket? rings? or something even worse?

... Well That being Done ,,,tar ??? .. Hard to say without seeing it personally or perhaps a vidio,..take your air hose off the manifold and see if the engine pulls air as it is cranked ,I am not a mechanic , Just a guy that requires a mechanic to pull Me out from time to time .,. Perhaps others will chime in.
