Case 530 Identity

I recently bought a Case 'TLB' (although here in BC we just call it a backhoe). I was told that it was a 320, but my research so far suggests that it's a 530 (but without the 'CK'). The serial number plate for the tractor is long gone, but the tools (both Model 31's) have serial numbers 4049930 (loader) and 4042792 (backhoe). The engine is gas and has the number D200 cast into the block above and slightly to the rear of the distributor (see attached image). The engine serial number is 345S07260. The transmission housing has the number G-1096 cast into the left side; the shuttle housing (if that's what it's called) has the number G1355 cast into the right side.

It has the rounded grill with the 'eyebrow' headlight housing (see attached image), rather than the flat face of the 530CK. The grill itself is expanded mesh with vertical folds, which seems to be common to some 320's and some 530's that I've seen.

The images that I've seen in this forum of the steering on the 320 shows a worm and roller with a horizontally mounted shaft. Mine has a funnel-shaped housing (as seen from underneath) located under and partly ahead of the radiator. Input is from a steering shaft with 2 U-joints; output is via a vertical shaft with a Pitman arm and tie-rod connected to the left knuckle. A gear-driven power steering pump is located on the right-front side of the engine, beneath the generator (although I haven't been able to determine how it transmits to the steering system). The only manual that I've been able to find so far is for a 'CK', with its Hydrostatic steering, so I haven't been able to find any info on this system. Can anyone tell me what oil it uses and if there is a drain plug to change the oil?

As for general spec's, it has the 77.2 wheelbase of the 530, but the 48-or-so front track of the 320.

I would like to know if it's a 320 or a 530 (or a 540 according to tractordata.com due to the gas engine).

I know that, without a serial number, I can't determine the year, but I wonder if there's any production data on the loader and the hoe that would tell me the year based on their serial numbers.

A few other questions that I have:
- I presume that the transmission and the shuttle body share the same lubricant, which I understand to be Hypoid 90W
- I haven't been able to find a hydraulic filter anywhere. I'm familiar with the Model 32 and its filter, but can't seem to find one on this 31.
Last but not least, I would like to know the fan belt size so that I can pick up a new one before I take everything apart to remove the old one

Looks like a pre CK 530 tractor to me, without pictures of the BH and the clutch pedal area we cant tell if it is a torque converter tractor, more pics are needed, at any rate no 90 in the shuttle box, that is Hytran Ultra or a good equivalent. If it is a TC tractor that would literally gum things up. Side view shots of the whole tractor would be good.

If it has a 2 bolt starter and an oil filter with fruit jar threads its likely a 320B,
A 530 has a 3 bolt starter and a full flow oil filter.

Does it have a bendix cylinder in front of the axle?Maybe you could take a picture of that also.

Pic1 is a p/n for early 530 dry clutch torque tube it may also be for other model tractors but can't be the 320 torque tube p/n as they have different engines and a different configuration. As an example 320 torque tube will have a tachometer drive access in the bell housing as in pic 2 & 3, 530 has the tach drive on the generator not torque tube like the 320.

Check you bell housing like this pic, If no tach drive it is not a 320. May not be a 530 either but not 320.

Fellas, it has a fuel pump plate where the old style filter base would be located, It's probably a 159 with the oil filter located ahead of the distributor, the picture also shows a electric temp sender. I stand with the 530. The only thing I am in doubt about is it dry clutch or TC with mechanical shuttle!!

Early W3, or 511B CK variant? Read the model number off the hoe.

The W3 has self leveling arms on top of the main loader frames which those pics do not show, it is the later series engine than a 511 cause the filter is NOT behind the distributor, A picture of the low RF side of the block would show a forward low mounted filter, it is undoubtedly a 159 CID gas as per the 530 tractor, there is a fuel pump plate where the old filter setup would be, I have never seen a 530 series with the fuel tank setup that Joe pictured in his post, nor does the case online parts site show it with the 530, thankfully that went out the window with the 00 series, the 530 had the straight gas tank with lots of room to work under it, as I stated before , it has the electric temp sender and they started with the 30 series, there was a pre CK series with that grill guard and no self leveling loader, I would still like to see pics of the clutch pedal area to determine if it is a TC transmission but I'm stickin with the early 530 hoe and loader. The 511 size transmission housing, considerably larger and heavier. did nor see use in the 530 it was used in the 680 series

mEI: It does have the oil filter ahead of the distributor and a shuttle with what I presume to be a dry clutch . In your other comment, you
said not to put 90w in the shuttle. It appears to me that the shuttle housing and the transmission/differential housings share the same
fluid, or at least I can't see a drain or a filler on the trans/diff housing. The only drain I see is at the rear of the shuttle housing
and the only filler is the dipstick just ahead of the shuttle control. The oil that's at the dipstick is way thicker than hydraulic fluid
(which I presume Hytran Ultra to be) and smells like gear oil. As for the hoe and loader, they're both the model 31. The 530CK mostly uses
the model 32, with the self-leveling bucket on the loader. I've attached the pictures that you requested.

bob57: There is a reservoir on the right side of the engine at the rear that contains power steering fluid. 2 pressure lines and 1 return line run from this to a pump, also on the right side, that is built into the block and presumably gear driven from either the crank- or camshaft. I haven't looked too closely, but there doesn't seem to be a connection between this pump and the steering gear, and there doesn't seem to be any power effect to the steering system. I will be removing the generator in the next few days and can provide pictures of the pump, if needed. Also, since my original posting, I've cleaned up the front end of the tractor and determined that the steering box has a grease nipple, so my fluid and filler/drain location question is solved

The 90 wt drain is at the rear of the tractor in the area where the drawbar would be, The separation point for the oils is at the front of the 4 speed, anything ahead of that split is HTU. It is indeed a 530 tractor and the hoe looks correct to me. I was working on these since they came out and up to my retirement 7 yrs ago. The later 530 CK series had a hydra leveling system using a slave cylinder to transfer oil to level the bucket. The hood and gas tank design is definitely 530. The 530s of this vintage never had self leveling on the loader. If it had the upper self leveling arms atop the loader frame it is then designated a W3 not a 530. Get the 90 weight out of the front box and get a lighter oil in there that can flow better. The plug you describe at the center of the tractor is the shuttle drain. You are correct on the dry clutch with a mechanical shuttle. true power shuttles did not appear till the 580 series.

I am in the same situation as KM Thompson. I bought an older model Case 530CK backhoe. It is supposed to be a 1963 530 ck. I was able to download a manual but it appears to not be for the correct model. The backhoe appears to be a model 31 like KM Thompson but the power steering has only 1 piston that goes along the top of the front axle and the manual I have shows a completely different power steering setup with 2 pistons kind of running parallel to the tractor. . I want to do a few repairs on this but need to Identify the exact model I have. I have looked for Serial and model numbers in different places according to research I have done to find what model the tractor is. The only info I have is the plate on the motor which is a gasser. 2005695. I need to identify the Power steering. There is none. I lift the front end up. turn the wheel and go in that direction. I also broke a line off of 1 of the swing pistons.
