Case 580 B Diesel

I have a 580-B Diesel w/ power shuttle. In second or third gear it is really lacking in power. In first gear it seems ok.
Does anyone have a thoughts on what the problem could be.

First thing to do is replace the fuel filters, then check for pressure from the lift pump that feeds the injection pump. Check air filter. Next, check pump timing and finally check the injectors for proper fuel delivery. Also check the return line to the takk for blockage.
Are you getting any smoke from the exhaust and if so what color. White smoke is unburned fuel due to faulty injectors or low compression. Black smoke indicates excess unburned fuel, possibly dirty air filter or improper pump timing. Blue smoke indicater burned oil due to worn rings and valves or guides.
Hopefully by using a methodical approach the cause will be obvious... Gene

Gene has given you good advise. One correction. There is NO fuel pump delivering fuel to the injection pump. It's all gravity feed from the tank to the Roosa-Master pump. Since I own a 580B with a 188 diesel, it's not a powerhouse engine (52 horsepower). It has more than enough power for the backhoe operation, but could use a few more horses for loader operation and road travel.
