Case 580 backhoe shuttle shift rebuild problems

Backhoe would not move at more than a creep speed in forward and reverse according to lady who owns it. Her husband recently passed and she asked me to have a look at it. I removed oil sump and found partially clogged screen and chunks of fibrous material in bottom of pan. Oil was black. Ordered a complete rebuild kit, removed unit from tractor and tore it apart. Reverse clutch discs were burnt. Forward discs appeared to be okay. The beleville spring washer was much flatter than the new one in the rebuild kit. Started the reassembly but the forward clutch pressure plate retaining snap ring (part #50 on the equipment parts source pages) will not fit in the corresponding groove in the ring gear. The shop manual specifies a ring 0.090-0.093 in thickness. The groove is only 0.072 inches thick and very shallow. The new snap ring and the old one are both 0.092 thick. When disassembling unit I did not look to see how that snap fit but in retrospect it could not have been seated in the groove and must have been just sitting on top of the internal splines of the ring gear. In which case the circumference of the belleville spring would sit on the snap ring and not on the pressure plate. Is this right? Doesn't make sense to me. If anyone has an explanation I would be very happy to hear it.

If you are working on a 580CK or 580B there are two brands of shuttles that were used,, there are a couple changes between the two this may be your issue, this is just a guess with no more info than I have at this time

The machine is a 580C. Present owner has had it for 5-6 years and used it quite a bit for clearing snow and some digging and it was working fine until the reverse quit working. It must have been assembled correctly for it to have worked that long. It just seems strange to have a snap ring that has not got a groove that it fits into. As is the ring is acting only as a spacer. I sure would like to know how wide the groove on another ring gear is. Any one got an old one sitting in their scrap pile?

I would not have commented had you put the full model down,, I have never had to work on a 580C they we sold them but had zero issues in them the year they came out, that was also they year we sold the dealership

Cliff, that is the way the snap ring belongs, if you lay all the snap rings out and compare the ODS of all of them you will find several of the same size except for thickness, they will have a different bevel on one end than the other, the other two, the one goes down into the drum just as you described and the other one holds the piston carrier in. when installing the piston carrier be sure to keep the belleville washer centered so it does not restrict the carrier from coming all the way in. I usually put heavy grease on the B washer to keep it from moving around then use a screwdriver to keep the washer centered. Once you have the unit assembled use the selective snap rings to get your plate clearance at the snap ring correct--.011----.040, do not get it to tight or it will drag and keep you from shifting gears in shuttle neutral. When yo are all set up to assemble the unit take the little fibre shaft feeder tube seals and wind them up in a tight little circle to give them some "set", Then use thick grease to hold them tight in their grooves before dropping the unit down in the drum. Oh another helpful hint, do not install the bearing into the hub until you have got all the clutch plates started on their hub, having the bearing out lets you shift the hub around to catch the plates, once the shaft is all the way in install the bearing and the snap rings.

Wish I had a buck for all those I've done.

OH, if you have not' inspect the pump and the converter stub to make sure the converter drive lugs are straight and the pump internal gear is not worn beveled putting pressure endways on the pump gear,

Sorry about missing the C. You tried to help and I appreciate the effort.

Thanks a whole bunch mEl. Just the information that I was hoping to get. I sometimes tend to overthink things instead of just going ahead and doing it. I really did not want to put it together, drive 120 miles, roll about in the snow for a while putting it back on the tractor then finding out It wasn't going to work.
Again thanks a lot

Hey so I'm no mechanic but my 580e shuttle was low on fluid and that's the first thing I would check it has to be running to check and I think add
