Case 580 ck( 1972) question

Hi all, is it possible that my power steering pump can leak fluid into my crankcase? Always having to add power steering fluid and drain crankcase oil( i know I'm pretty much answering my own question, it has to be the answer)
I guess what I'm wanting to know if someone has had this issue and how they fixed it?( this is a front loader/ backhoe equipped model)

I am not really up on the later CK tractors but if you have the engine mounted, cam gear driven PS pump, a leaking drive shaft seal (26) leaks PS oil into the timing cover and drops into crankcase. This is a fairly common thing on the 50's & 60's tractors.

Okay, yes that is what my power steering pump is. Are there just bolts that go through the pump and into the timing assembly( I don't see any kind of gasket or seal on number 25 where it would meet up with timing assembly?) does it mess with the timing or does anything need done special when replacing it with a new one?( I know other things need certain gear mesh measurement) as in between the drive gear on the power steering pump and what it meets up to inside the timing cover and I'm not sure if this would be one of those times where I need to make sure that it is within the specs of how tight that gear is or does it just automatically find its correct tightness somehow?

If you have a 1972 580CK then it is actually a 580B CK. Both have the same pump and mounting gasket.

Yes, there is a gasket between the pump front body (25) that mates to the timing cover for splash oil. As far as I can tell it is the same gasket (A30042) for both 580CK gas and diesel. There will be 3 bolts threaded into the pump front body from the front of the timing cover. I haven't found the bolts on the parts views but odds are they will be 3/8 inch and different lengths. The gears are helical and there is no way to check gear tooth backlash between the pump gear teeth and the cam gear teeth. Inspect the pump gear for unusual wear and defects in the teeth, if ok, shouldn't be any problem with mesh.

The parts book doesn't give torques. That info would be in your service manual, either a specific torque, or if lacking a specific torque, you use a general torque chart for the size, grade, and thread pitch of the fastener.

I see but it's a steel bolt going into an aluminum houses and I don't think there's any lock washers?

You need to see if your service manual gives you a specific torque for them. If not, it would be a general torque. in aluminum you can stay on the low end of the torque range for the fastener.

If you feel uncomfortable without lock washers use a drop or two of medium grade (blue) thread locker on clean dry threads.
