Hello, My neighbor has a Case 580 CK. He would like to know what oil to use in the shuttle. It appears the oil is leaking into the transmission case. I am guessing that is going to be a big repair. Any information would be appreciated. Also, is there a good source for a manual on this tractor?

Case TCH or a good quality Hy-Trans equivalent in the shuttle, the transmission takes 80W 90 gear oil, tractor split to replace the seals.

as AJ said either TCH or Hy-Tran oil on the rear end I have went to changing to Hy-Tran also in them much easier to turn in the cold temps I have over 5000 hrs on my 580CK running it with Hy-Tran in both compartments with no trouble, on the oil transfer if it is doing it some what slow you can just drain out some fromm the rear end then put back in the shttle this way (if you are running the same oil), if she is doing it rapidly a split is required to locate and fix the problem, books were still available through Case but they seem to thik they are Gold any more so any Hy-Capacity dealer can now get you a service manuals from Jensales or you can order direct from them I have also seen them on ebay at times cnt

Is the oil transfer problem the one mEL gave the fix for? It involved taking off the transmission cover and plugging a pipe to prevent the oil transfer. Worked on my 580 CK.

I don't know much about his problem. He showed me his shuttle oil level was not showing on the dip stick, and his transmission dipstick showed overfull. He didn't tell me if it was a quick leak or slowly over time. I have passed on the information everyone else has posted. Thanks for the help.

No. I did a search for the post you were referrring to and couldn"t find it. mEl does not have an open email. I emailed my neighbor with the info I got from everyone, but haven"t seen him. I have a feeling that backhoe may sit for awhile.

not sure what other info you need, as other poster said mEl has a lot of knowlage on Case I myself have worked on 580CK/580B's since 1966 and have done work from loader bucket to backhoe teeth many times if you need some thing scanned from a service manual I will do it but need you to be specific on what area you are working on as the book is very large and I will not scann the whole thing as it would takes hours hundereds of pages also the leaking /transfer of oil is not specifily covered, it is just some thing a tear down/inspection will reveal, that is why I asked how bad a transfer he has slow transfer can be a internal seal a fast one can be the tube some one else mentioned and can be fixed with out a split, if the unit has a 3pt hitch ( yes they can have 3pt with a backhoe) the transfer is usally the rockshaft seals hope this gives you more info, if you need mEl specificly just go to the newest page and post for him I am sure he will answer in a day or so cnt

Thanks for the info. I am sure I will be getting back to this forum when he gets into it more. I haven't talked to him since I posted, but am pretty sure he won't be getting into it right away. I just passed the info onto him as he doesn't go onto the net often. I think his wife just passes on my emails. The first thing he wanted to know was the type of oil in the trans and shuttle. It's just sitting in his driveway right now, along with the numerous cars, trucks, and other equipment he has on his property.

(quoted from post at 23:44:29 10/26/12) Hello, My neighbor has a Case 580 CK. He would like to know what oil to use in the shuttle. It appears the oil is leaking into the transmission case. The fix that I posted was to remove the 4 speed shifter cover and look high on the right side at the front to see if there is a pipe sticking back into the 4 speed gear area that has no cover on it. Originally it had a plastic cap on it if the tractor had no 3pt hitch. if it is open it will allow a transfer of HTU to the rear compartment.

The fix--- get a large groove pin and drive it into the pipe to plug it. The pipe was used to return hydraulic oil to the front compartment from the hitch piston if it should develope a leak. In the day, there was a service bulletin from the service dept with this fix so it is a Case fix as I described it.

Later housings had a tin cover which covered the piston and linkage and had a hose that came into the 4 spd housing and plugged onto the aforementined pipe which vented into the front housing.

HTH, mEl
