Case 580 Super L 4wd issue

Recently purchased a 1995 580SL , only issue it has is the 4wd won’t engage at all. From my research into the issue it seems the problem is likely the mechanism in the transmission, I have power all the way to the solenoid & it looks like if there was an electrical failure it would be stuck in 4wd ? Also while changing the transmission fluid I found a small piece of compression spring that looks like the ones in that 4wd mechanism in the parts breakdown. Am I on the right track? & can that be fixed by removing driveshaft & the 4wd output shaft??
