Case 580B CK Shuttle

Cannot get this cover off of the shuttle.

About 10 years ago, while using the backhoe, the shuttle locked into forward and would not release. The transmission could still be shifted into all 4 gears and neutral and the range selector could be shifted between high and low and could drive the backhoe forward.

The problem I'm having is getting the cover off the shuttle box to see what the problem is. It is loose and moves freely but cannot lift it more than an inch or two. I cannot even pry it up any further. What could be catching, I cannot see in there.

The front cover will not come off unless the shuttle is in the reverse (fork back) position, the fork and shaft extend front in neutral and reverse position and interfere with the front of the casting opening. You will have to try to get it into reverse somehow ,by prying. I have seen people bend forks and break the top casting so be careful, but it can be very difficult, there are no tricks or hints.

It is stuck in forward position. I did try, at first carefully, to get it out of forward. But, as frustration level increased I was no longer careful.

I wonder if raising a rear tire off the floor and rocking it would help?

One thing is for sure that cover has to come off to see what's happing in there.

Raising a rear tire and prying while someone rocks the tire, while in gear, may help. Nothing but a bit of time to lose trying that.
