I have a case 580B diesel serial number 5263188 with no plug to find tdc on right side of motor I do have marks on crankshaft pulley in numbers and DC. I found 2 dimples on drive gear but none on valve gear. I have pump gear with a dimple on it.

How do I install the pump gear? I have tdc and push rods move. The two dimple markers are close but almost not showing. Any pics would help because this one is not like my other ones.

Thanks so much this is not in my book. Oh, who ever stole this pump knew what they were doing. Thanks JR

Your descriptions are a bit difficult to follow. I can just add this, if your at TDC on number 1 and the exhaust valve is closing and the intake is opening, if that is what you mean you are on “rock” which puts your number 4 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke. If by the “push rods move” means they have clearance then yes you should be on TDC of compression for cylinder 1. As for the alignment of the gears, it is for these types of things where a good manual is irreplaceable. Does the pump have window to open to time the pump?

Thank you "used red",
Maybe I can explain a little better now, I just had surgery and now I am off those meds. Yes, I have a window on the pump and the decals say to put it at 8 degrees BFTDC.

I have a 1975 case 580B. I don't have a plug in the bell housing to see any timing marks but I did find a pointer on the front of the block and markings on the crank shaft pulley. When I turn the engine over to TDC, the 2 marks on the cam gear are at about 1:30. IF I turn the engine to where the 2 dimple marks are on the point of the idler gear, my TDC on the crank is about12 degrees off from TDC. I rechecked the valves for #1 and they are lose when at TDC and if I role it over again, the exhaust valve is tight and I can't push or move the push rod so I know when I role it again to TDC, it is right on TDC.

My question is this. Do I leave the two marks or dimples of the cam gear to where they are between the idler point or should I turn it back to TDC and install the pump gear? My idler gear has no dimples on it but the gear for the pump has a dimple to align with the idler gear point.

I took down the front of an older 188 to see how it was and the cam dimples align with the idler gear point and that gear has a dimple on it unlike the engine I am working on when I am at TDC. I can see two dimples on the cam gear, one on the idler gear and one on the pump gear.

I called Jenn Sales for another manual and they are sending one to me. They we're nice enough to send me a page as to where to time the gears but it doesn't sy where or how to correct from TDC like I said above.

I am sorry but this is getting to me. I will be able to get out there soon and finish installing this pump and this gear soon. I lay there at night thinking about those gears and I hate to ruin a gasket and not put the gears where they are supposed to go.

Thanks again for your help. J R
