Case 732 good tractor?

Hi, looking at a Case model 732 diesel with dual range transmission. Anyone have any experience with these old girls good or bad? It ran good in fall but won’t start now. Lost prime? Any known issues with fuel pump?

They are excellent tractors. Is yours the early eagle hitch or later comfort King model? Does it smoke when cranking? They are not the best starters if it's cold. It should have a manifold heater that will heat of you turn the key backwards for about 30 seconds or so. If that doesn't work, let it cool good and try a shot of starting fluid. But if there is no smoke then you need to look for a fuel issue.

That should be a great tractor. One of the shortcomings of the 30 series is the steering, but that one does not have that issue. So that one should be about the best you can get in that vintage.

The 30 series Case are simple and reliable, based on the 1955 Case 400 design. Operator comfort is not a strong feature on the pre-Comfort King tractors, similar to a Farmall 560. Clutch and brakes are heavy and the power steering is power assist, best to be rolling when turning the wheels or the power steering belt squeals even when the tractors were brand new. If you are unfamiliar with them I would try to drive one in operating condition to see how well you like it before investing in a non-runner.

Dual range is an eight speed transmission. The other transmission option was Case-O-Matic that has a locking torque converter instead of a clutch in front of the same eight speed transmission. People absolutely either love or hate the Case-O-Matic.

Check the prices of field ready units. This one looks rough, IMHO maybe worth $3,000 tops in running condition and no more than half that non-running.

At the FRONT of the injection pump there's a round steel cap with two wrench flats for a 19MM open end wrench. Remove the cap and work the hand throttle fully ON/OFF and see if the rack under that cap is moving freely IN/OUT. If rack DOES NOT move freely one or more injection pump plungers are stuck and pump will need removed to HOPEFULLY free them up. When rack is out you SHOULD be able to push it in easily, and the starting spring will pull it forward again part way if no plungers are stuck. If rack is stuck DO NOT attempt to start engine as it MIGHT run away uncontrollably and the only way to stop it would be to shut the air intake off.

Awesome! This is exactly what I was looking for. Pretty sure that something is stuck but didn’t know how to check. Much appreciated!
