Case 830 (831) Restoration

Good morning! I am a high school Ag teacher in California. My Ag mechanics classes work on tractor restorations each year. This year we were donated a Case 830 (831, Row Crop, Diesel). It seems to be mostly there and ran when it was parked. I do have a few questions/concerns that I was wondering if you all could help me with. I don't believe the fenders are stock, the previous owner thinks they are from an old Oliver and the dash is really thrashed. Does anyone have pictures of what fenders, dash and seat riser should look like for this tractor? Are there other models that parts will interchange with (730, 930 etc)? Lastly, are those rear rims correct for this tractor as well?

Thanks in advance for any help! I am sure I will have more questions as we go.

Here are my first pictures of my 1963 "730", with the fenders I assume should be on yours.

I googled Case 831 and came up with numerous pictures. The wheel rims are the adjustable spin out rims that are probably original. The seat is not
original. The fenders could be original as they are similar to the ones pictured when I googled it.

Regarding gauges: If you have a big hole in the dash then it takes the gauges as pictured. If they are all there, they can be fixed but it is
pricy. You will probably have a hard time getting anybody to donate a set (about $500). However, someone made an engine turned plate that mounts
over the whole and accepts regular generic gauges. So when you get to that you might want to look. I think I saw the plate on ebay.

The 830's were decent tractors but I preferred the raised seat/platform/steering column. A neighbor had such an 830 years ago but has been long gone. Anyways that
830 will be interesting to see redone.

I too have an 831C "high tin" Eagle Hitch tractor. Same tractor with torque converter drive rather than dry clutch. It also had Oliver fenders on it when I got it.
I took the fenders off and went to the local salvage yard to do some trading. They had no decent original shell fenders, but had a really nice set of fenders off of a 930 CK tractor. They wanted my old Oliver fenders pretty badly and I was able to replace the badly trashed hood, get side grab bars and a near new muffler from another 730 CK to put on my 831C.
I cut down and reformed the fronts of the 930 fenders to allow access to the operator area from front sides. I then fabricated the 2 post canopy, and then the side steps on each side. My tractor also had a wide front, but it needed extensive work and money to fix it. I had a dual front pedestal in my stash, so I mounted it in place of the wide front, and fabed up the front fender to keep the water and mud off the tractor when roading. I use this tractor in the woods, so I also built the front bumper/hitch, and grill guard.
The rear wheels on your tractor are "Star Burst" wheels, of 800 vintage. (1958-59 vintage) but could have been original to your 831, since they are 38" power adjust wheels. Us Case guy's have learned to never say "never" as far as options on tractors of that vintage are concerned.

The guy that makes them turns out small lots on an occasional basis and posts here, I forget his username now, if anyone needs I'll look it up. The replacement blank dash insert is quality, heavy aluminum machined and polished, holds a tach and four smaller round gauges. Looks great in my 611B.

(quoted from post at 06:04:30 01/08/19) Here are the Comfort King fenders. The only other fender used was the clamshell style as seen above.

Whoops. Sorry, shouldn't have said "only".

welcome to the Case world.

lots of info below. you've got a mid 1960's "tall tin" "Eagle Hitch" Case 830 with Case O Matic transmission.

to answer your question on ""Are there other models that parts will interchange with (730, 930 etc)?"" (didn't see much info below)

-most non engine parts are shared with the 730 Case as they are the same tractor different HP.(a few engine parts are shared like water pump, and some other misc things)
-a few parts are shared with the Case 800's like the Case-O-Matic part and some rear end, Eagle hitch, drawbar, levers
-a few parts might be shared with the 930/1030 like front tin, grills, air cleaner
-many engine internals would be shared with the 1030 Case. Namely the same engine but the 830 is a 4 cyld and the 1030 is a 6 cyl. the pistons, rods, heads are the same
-the dash/gage cluster is similar with all the 730s and early 930s but there were a couple different versions especially around 1961 was an "Autolite" made. I forget who made the 700/800s and the tall tin 730/830
-many parts are shared with the "low tin" 730/830's from 1960-1963ish but not the hood, grill, fuel tank dash tin ect.
-the clam shell fenders are hard to find but there are a few reproduction ones made.
-there was a guy who rebuilt the gages but I don't have his name and i'm not sure if he still does. I sold a used gage cluster or 2 and got around $3-500 for them by parting out (7-10 years ago).
-eagle hitch parts are available but as reproductions.
-steering gear box in interchangeable from the 700-1030's all years. my 1958 800 has a late model 1030 gear box in it. being a wide front you may not have much troubles there.
-later "Comfort King" 730/830s also have fewer interchangeable parts especially the tin rear of the fuel tank and the PTO, hydraulic system are not at all the same but gear shifters forward would be mechanically the same
-if you find good straight, hole free grill screens BUY THEM!

That's about all I can think of off hand.
Keep posting questions here. we'll get it figured out for you. good luck
