Case 830 Case o matic

I rebuilt an 830 case o matic a couple of years ago and it has been running fine. Recently right after startup, warm or cold, it seems like the torque converter has drained down and needs a minute to refill. Gauge pressure is good, just wont engage right away and takes a minute to slowly engage. Then it works fine for as long as I a using it.

I checked pressures.

Clutch pressure 200, but it drops to 165 with the rpm.

Pump pressure @200

Converter pressure 25 psi.

I swapped the control valve with a spare and clutch pressure is only 165 dropping with rpm. I didn’t check shims.

Converter 20

Am I looking at a torque converter leak? Ill check the housing bolts when I swap the control valves again. Could the hig clutch pressure have blown a converter seal?

I have one that is really slow at building pressure when started cold. I leave the transmission in
nuetral and pull the direct drive lever for 15 seconds or so while the engine is warming up. Seems
to bring the pressure up instantly.

Same here with my 1963 831C. Just start it and let it warm up in neutral. All will be fine.

After swapping control valves back I found the Clutch pressure at 165 and Converter at 133.

Clutch pressure drops about 40psi at idle. The book says should not drop more than 20psi.

When I turned the converter to inspect the bolts most of the bolts took a half turn tighter as I used them to turn the engine. When I assembles i used a torque wrench. Maybe they were a little loose o maybe they are too tight now, I don’t know.

Ill see how it does this afternoon. When I took it out a minute ago i put it in 2H and went up a hill with no problem until I stopped and tried to get going up the hill again in 2H. Had to down shift to get going. Overall seems fine.
