Case 830 COM Comfort King

Hello! I am looking at a Case 830 diesel Comfort King but it has a Case-o-Matic transmission. My father had an early 830 with COM and hated it. My 2 questions are: 1) are the later COMs better than the earlier ones? 2) If I decide that I don't like the COM, how hard is it to take a dual range transmission from a 730 Comfort King gas (741) and put it in the 830?

Thanks for any guidance on this one!

As far as i know, they are all the same from early to late. Hopefully some of the guys more knowledgable than me will chime in on how to operate it correctly. Do not waste your time and money making it a dual range tranny. Just but a different tractor. Just my opinion Bill

The only real difference is the comfort king models had a feathering valve for the clutch. The early models were either in or out, the later ones could be feathered like a dry clutch. Most who get used to them and learn to drive them love them. They are one of the hardest case tractors to get because anyone that has one won't sell easily.

I think in the past someone here has described how to modify the older clutch spool to add the feathering capability. I was either a chamfer or a ground flat on the leading edge of the spool. I have no idea what the size would be. Maybe search the archives to find that post?

The C-O-M's were a great tranny (Clutch). Always let the clutch pedal out at an idle, then accelerate, the same as any vehicle w/ a torque converter. To feather, use the throttle, or brakes. Shortly after the release of the 800's, a Field Update to the clutch spool was released. CASE simply supplied new spools that had the leading edge champhered to allow the feathering of the clutch. We have customers who removed the spool and champhered it themselves.
Buying an 830 diesel I'd be more concerned w/ cracked heads or cracked upper counterbores in the block. Crack the drain plug on the oil pan and look for coolant. When running, fill the radiator chuck full into the neck and look for bubbles. If I saw Ether cans around, I'd walk away.

I LOVE my 830 diesel caseomatic. Growing up - my dad would never buy a caseomatic - he said they were 'no good'. Well, he never owned one. Nothing to be scared of, 99% of the time people don't understand how to operate them. Follow John's operation advice above and buy an operators manual.
