Case 830 stuck in neutral!

Before I get the wrenches out, I"m just wondering if any of you fellas might know a cause for my 830 not going into gear? Running or not the gear shifter on the floor seems locked up in neutral. Clutch seems to be operating just fine. Funny thing is I used the tractor last week, backed her up into the bay, and shut her off. Now I can"t get it into a forward or reverse gear. H and L under dash seems fine, also...slim

While there may well be deeper (excuse pun) issues I'v had plenty of tractors where the gear lever jumps the selectors so no shifting. Simple and costless first check is to remove studs holding gear lever on to housing, lift assembly out and with torch and a pry bar line the selectors up and replace lever. Wear on the small "knob" on bottom end of gear lever can give it clearance to skip its position. Perhaps try a thinner gasket under its mounting, or if need be build up the worn face.

Further to my other reply, almost always the tractor is stuck in the gear you have just used and skips the selector putting it into neutral. This gives the situation of gear engaged and lever in neutral, a bit floppy. The pry bar is to lever the selector back into the neutral position, in line with all the others.

Thanks, Graham! I"ll yank the gear shift cover tomorrow and see what I can see.
Curious though, what is your reference to a "torch" in your reply? Is this a typo? A kiwi term unfamiliar with us yanks, maybe?...slim

(quoted from post at 21:03:38 06/17/14) I'm pretty sure that "torch" is Australian for flashlight, unlike "Fosters" which is definitely NOT Australian for beer.
Yeah, The torch and pry bar got me too. Then I saw he was from NZ. Just wondering Graham, We in the USA think oxy/acetylene when we here torch. Some have called a gas axe or a gas wrench. What do you call an oxy/acetylene outfit?

Denver, There was a little kit available at one time seems like some spacer/s went on the shift rails. We had a lot of trouble like that with our 730. Had to pull the top cover to install. Tom

You guys were exactly right. I finally got the blessed gearshift cover removed, (a cutting torch might have made it easier, even if a bit destructive) got my fat head under the dash (what a pain) and lined everything up. Took this old man all day but she shifts again.
Thanks for the wise reflections of those who have done this before, it's soooo much easier knowing you are going where others have gone before...slim

Glad the cheap fix worked. The first one I had was a DEX in 1948. There was not much clutter around the gear lever then but we have "progressed" a long way since then. The other remarks about different terminology made me smile. The torch sure is a flashlight and sometimes we torch or weld something with an oxy-acetylene welding torch. On our cars a hood is the bonnet and a fender is a guard or mudguard, and the correct way to spell aluminum is aluminium. Regards to all from "down under" and we don't stand upside down.
