Case 831C shifting problem

I have a Case 831C that is a real bugger to shift into forward or reverse. I get it idled way down and it still grinds into gear. The oil levels seem to be fine. Once in gear it runs great. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I used the Case Tran/Hyd Oil. Should I use another but is Rated as Type A?

Does the converter pressure gauge drop to zero when you push the pedal? If so, there is a good posibility that the direct drive plates are warped and draging, causing the gear grinding.
I am not sure anymore what the viscosity of HyTran is now, but the atf was 10wt. You can get the Case TCH fluid from Case construction dealers.
Is this a problem that just developed, or has it gone on for a while. Does the tranny pressure come up quickly when the clutch pedal (inching spool) is let out? Does the direct drive lock up briskly when you pull the lever up, and does the pressure stay in the green, and not drop off?

My Dad and I always have used ATF in both a 730 and
830. Type A is not available and the latest
replacement is Dextron III. I used Dextron III for
the last change in the 730, very minor gear grinding
sometimes, worked well for 50 years and I did not
think it was a good idea to use CaseIH Hytran that
is more viscous.

I do watch the clutch pressure guage and it does take a bit before it comes up. When I push the clutch in it does not drop. We have had this problem for many years as I remember. The direct drive does lock up briskly and does stay in the green.
