Case 900 diesel difficulties

I have a Case 900 tractor which originally hadn’t been used for about a decade plus. Initially it would start but would smoke backfire and sputter constantly. I worked on changing the. Filters. And bleeding. The. System but the problem continued.I discussed it with my local diesel mechanic who suggested that the injectors were fouled or shot. I took them into a diesel specialist where they could check the injectors and diagnose any problems. They rebuilt the injectors and said they were now well within tolerance and should not cause any more problems. Meanwhile I checked the engine compression, cleaned and reassembled the precombustion chamber res as suggested by diesel specialties. Replaced the fuel filters again, installed the new injectors and I’ve bled the system completely 3 times, I also wound up replacing the fuel injector pump even though the original pump was performing within tolerance. Engine turns over at speed, I have fuel at the injectors with no sign of air when I crack the injector line but the problem continues to remain. Engine turns over at speed, pops, sputters, coughs, smokes, occasionally blows flame out of the exhaust pipe, but will not start and run for more than a few seconds before it dies. I have run out of ideas as to what the issue could be. I am looking for any suggestions from anyone familiar with Case diesels, the injector pump is the Bosch inline pump and for this model is the factory stock pump.

Have you looked at, or adjusted the valves? It sure sounds like a valve problem, or possibly timing. If the valve lash is correct, and the timing is correct, then I suspect the valves are sticking. What did you have for compression?

should have been the first thing checked, sounds like you barked up the wrong trees. backfiring and valves and timing go hand in hand. you checked the compression i see now,... so what is the reading?
