case 970 battery question

can i replace the two batteries with one big battery or does it have to have two? the way they have the battery box made its a pain in the butt with two batteries just thought it would be easier with one. has anyone ever moved the box to a better location?

Thought about relocating on my 970 but, I cut the box in half braced the open ends, drilled an extra bolt hole to retain the second or rear box half, welded a square nut in it so it could be bolted in like the front. That said I use an optima 31 stud battery and have only needed one for several years. It does not generally stay extremely cold here in Southeast KS. If it was not shedded with a block heater and battery charger available I would frequently need two batteries. Tom

P.S. Forgot to say this is open station, and by splitting the box I can easily change the battery with the front loader brackets on the tractor.

I don't have a 970, but on my 830 CK I replaced the two 6 volts under the fuel tank with a big single 12 volt, one of those hundred pounders with the posts on the same end. built a box out of two inch angle with a plywood bottom and a good hold down, mounted on the right side of the caso-matic housing. Those big batteries last forever, present one is 11 years old and working fine. Those 6 volts only lasted a max of 3 years, I figured it costs me a quarter every time I started it.

one of my 970's I have one battery in just wrapped the extra pos end with inner tube then black tape have had no problems but I do not use it in the winter

Been switching 70 series to one battery for 25 years. Use half the box and both ends, shorten original cables and use a GOOD quality group 27 battery and you will notice NO change from 2 to 1. You can slide the battery out the front with cables attached for cleaning and servicing in about 1 minute. I think using the 1 battery they seem to last longer than 2. Rod.

We kept ours on a 2-battery system but installed the battery box from a 90-series Case so it's mounted on the side and easier to get to.
