Case 970 Engine oil capacity

Was draining engine oil in 970 case and it drain out about 8 gallon. Was wondering how many gallons this thing holds. The old oil did not have any water or diesel in it, that leaves me to believe that maybe its hydro fluid. We checked the oil when we bought the tractor and the oil level was fine, I changed the hydro filters and fluid and put 18/19 gallon of hydro fluid back in it.

Couple of questions

1- how many gallons/quarts does this tractor take, we are changing oil filter also?
2- if it is getting hydraulic fluid in the engine oil, what is out?

I can't answer all your questions but it should take 13 US quarts with a filter change. Did you check the oil level on the dipstick prior to draining the oil?

Have you let the tractor sit a few days, then cracked the oil pan drain plug some, and see if any coolant comes out before the oil?

Chances of hydraulic oil migrating into the engine oil is slim to none. Would have to be a power shift tractor to even be a possibility. If a power shift, there is hyd. oil in the bell housing, but it is not under pressure, and it would have to push through the main bearings that are under engine oil pressure. Another possibility...are you sure the engine is a 401? If it is a 504 it would hold much more oil.

Anthony, You mentioned that you changed the trans fluid and filters. Many newbees to these tractors are not aware of the cold oil relief cartridge in the center of the hyd. filters and unknowingly discard them with the old filters. I am just checking to make sure you are aware of them and reinstalled them in the new filters.
