Case 970 power shift

I'm thinking of looking at a 970 for sale a couple hours drive from me. The owner says it has a power shift transmission.

Is there any way I can "sense, feel or tell" that the power shift is working properly when I test drive the tractor?

I have an IH 966 and that TA gives a definite surge to the tractor when moved. Should the 970 react in a similar fashion?

Thanks,
Lee

Lee, the tractor should not slip when the powershift lever is moved. You should notice a definate "surge" when shifting. Yes, somewhat like the TA when is shifted up or down regaurding the sense,or feel. Alos, the engine should surge breifly when clutch pedal is depressed. If it darn near snuffs the engine when you push the clutch pedal, there is an issue. Try the three point when the trans is in gear. Nothing should slip or be slow to react. Properly maintained, the power shift Case transmissions have a very long life. I have had very good luck with both the 770, and 1570.

Watch the transmission pressure gauge on the dash at idle with the trans in neutral while shifting from 1,2,3. Gauge should remain the same. When inching(clutch) pedal is down listen to and hear if it sounds like a pop can in a blender or vibration,,resulting in planetary problems,,,do this at idle also. Then rev the tractor up and shift from 1,2,3 notice any vibrations. Dont let me scare you those powershifts are good and so is the 970. Let us know what you find.
