case 970 powershift

anyone familiar with these 70 series powershifts love to hear advice.
got a 970 and i cant shift from 1st powershift to reverse unless pedal is clear down and after i hear the engine surge (same vise versa from rev to 1st)
have sluggish engagement in 1st and 3rd powershift (pretty sure got that narrowed down to sticky c2 spool in valve body) just havent tore into it yet. but in all my research people say you can shift from 1st to rev without complete clutch engagement and mine is not that way. any info is much appreciated

Years ago a neighbor had a 970 on a pump in a manure pit. Shifting from reverse to first several times to stir the pit until it didn't move. Always stop before shifting to reverse and fully clutch it. Partial power shift, not full ps.

If the power shift is working properly the only way the shift from fwd to rev can be done without clutching is if the shift spool is installed 1/2 turn out of position, it is only relieved on one side to provide reverse lockout function. With the torque limiter issue staring you in the face, why would anyone be so dumb!

If I understand you guys right, my tractor is functioning as it should……pedal to floor after the normal engine surge before I can go from 1 to rev or rev back to 1…….
