I have a CASE D350 track loader. It hasn't run since my father passed away. I need to start it and use it.

I am mechanically inclined and I understand the basics of diesels... what should I do to this before attempting to start it? I figured checking the engine oil and coolant. I was also told to drain the diesel fuel... but I don't know how to do that. I also figured it would be a good idea to check the hydraulic fluid... again, I'm not sure where to check that.

Are there any guides online the describe the purposes of off the levers and pedals? Unfortunately, the loader is parked in a tight spot, so I have to be very careful to avoid tearing things down.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes check all the oil levels, the engine takes 15/40W oil the shuttle and hydraulics Case TCH,the shuttle is dipped with the engine running on low idle it will read high with the engine stopped, tranny and final drives 80/90W gear oil,the drain valve for the fuel tank is bottom front left, the tank is under the seat,I would not open any part of the fuel system except the drain valve till after you have it started,if you go changing filters etc air will get into the system and make starting it more difficult, get it started and run it a bit then service the fuel system,if the stop control has been pushed back to the run position when it was parked it should start right up,if not the valve can stick in the stop position and will need freeing.
Good luck

AJ, thanks for the info... but it appears I'm an idiot. Its a diesel, but it is a CASE 350, not a D350. Will that change the oils it needs?

Thanks

If you add to the Tranny make SURE you only use GL1 gear oil. Also at the back of the machine under the seat there is a water trap that you can drain until only fuel come out.

I'm not familiar with a stop control. There seems to be a knob that can be pulled out... but I assumed that was some sort of choke.

I also am not clear on how the glow plugs are warmed up. With a GM diesel car, there was a stop on the ignition key that warmed the plugs until a 'wait' light turned off. How does that work on an older diesel? A friend mentioned that there is a button that needs to be pressed in... how long to you press it before hitting the starter?

Also, will starter fluid or ether help get things going?

Thanks.

There is no glow plugs on that engine, give it a small sniff of starting fluid and it should start, the thing that looks like a choke is the stop control, you pull it to stop the engine and it is a good idea to push it back when the engine stops rather than leave it in the stop position where it can stick with the result you have a no start next time.
Good luck

Hmmm... I think its pulled out, so that will likely be a problem. I"m visiting the loader today with some batteries so I"ll check that further. What does the stop control do? Knowing that it does short or disconnect the nonexistant ignition, does it kill fuel? I assume its too small to operate an exhaust or intake valve. How much disassembly to unstick the control?

Thanks for the continuing info. I really appreciate it as I am way out of my usual pool of know how.

Inside the fuel injection pump the amount of fuel injected is controlled by a metering valve,it is a round bar with a spiral groove in it,it has a lever on top that connects to the throttle which moves the valve from A to B,ie low to high idle,in order to stop the engine this valve has to be turned back past the low idle to shut off the fuel, this is done with the stop control, you should be ok if it was parked with the stop in.
Good luck

If its a new day, I must have an update.

The stop control was stuck, but some tinkering and it was free. I see how it hooks to the fuel injection.

My next mystery is that it is completely out of fuel. I find it odd that dad would have left it without diesel. If I remember right, diesel don't just evaporate like gas, or does it. Needless to say, I need to fill it up. I imagine being out of fuel will make the starting harder.

Since I have batteries and keys ready to go, I wanted to see if it would bump over. Turning the key does nothing. Then, in fading paint, I noticed the key detents are labelled. Acc, Off, On and Preheater. That seems pretty self explainitory... but there is no Start position. Do I need to do something else? Is there a safety lock out that would disable cranking the engine?

BTW, while the loader says CASE 350 on the side in big letters, the model on the serial tag says D350. The serial number is 4212040... which seems a lot later than most people who have posted serials here. You can tell the year from the serial, right?
Once again, thanks in advance.
