Case/David Brown 990 selectamatic

Hello, I have a faulty alternator. The original Lucas is the type that's on it. My question, is it generally best to just replace it with a new one, or re manufactured one? Or, is it worthwhile to try and rebuild the Lucas? If I do replace it, I'm not sure what the correct part number for it is. When I look on the case I H on line site , there are several, different ones listed. How can I Identify the proper model ( part number ) ? The serial number is after 110......., the first three digits are 111 - it's a 1979 model I think. Thanks for any help. Steve

I put 2 Lucas alt's in mine and gave up. I wired in a Delco 10si, spent more time fabbing a mount than wiring it. Works great now.

As far as the British Lucas system, you can find a zillion jokes about Lucas "inventing darkness" and "being responsible for the Brits drinking warm beer". For someone used to US style auto electrical system, the Lucas system is idiotic!

Sir, would I need a diode or resistor in the wire going to the switch to prevent a back-feed? Or would the dash light provide enough resistance? How did you wire the Delco in? Thanks, Steve

What I did is wire it the same way I wire all my other alts. The heavy red wire goes through an ammeter. I had to add the ammeter as the DB idiot lights aren't my idea of what you want on a diesel you use out in the fields and woods where you really need things to start, and that's to say nothing of the cost of a new battery if it's not charging enough. So the red wire runs through an ammeter and onto the battery. You can get a one wire alternator and just leave it at that if you want. Or you can get a 3 wire and have the ability to either have an auto type "on" off set up. In that set up the #2 terminal, which is the "outside" terminal looking at the alt from the rear (I think they are often marked "2", goes to the battery stud on the alt. The inside terminal either goes to the load side of your key switch, or you can do as I do and run it to the Pos side of the battery through a weather proof push button switch. I do this because most of my stuff sits in the weather and moisture screwing up switches. I push the button and watch the ammeter. If it doesn't show a charge, I check the battery itself with a voltage gauge to see if it is in fact charging. Ammeters also die in the weather you see! Some people run a warning light instead of the push button that I use and tell me it works. I tried it and the lights kept blowing, so I went to the switch.

FWIW, I have never seen a DB with the original wiring and charging system that worked. I have seen a couple later Case/DB's that did, but they were pretty nice and pristine tractors.

Here's a diagram that might help you-http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/Delco_Alternators.html
