Case DC - Starter

I need to have the starter on 1953 Case DC rebuilt. The set screw does not want to come out to remove the starter. Any suggestions? Heat?

that might be your only option, maybe do the wax trick on it. need to lube those threads good on assembly.

Does it have a lock nut on it? Some did & you have to back it off first. It works just like when you "double nut" a bolt.

Spray with your favorite penetrant and tap lightly with a hammer and repeat over a few days.
Then heat just the bolt if still stuck and let it cool and try after spraying and tapping some more.

Be sure you're using an 8 pt 1/2 in drive socket or a 4 corner socket made for square head bolts, I doubt you'd snap it. Steel bolts don't really rust to cast iron. Rapping with a brass bunch or hammer so you don't distort the head, as mentioned, usually works. Also, as mentioned, heating the bolt only, and allowing it to cool is effective, as is wax on the bolt while it's hot. Just use a lot of patience. Larry

Something you maybe want to try as strange as it sounds is to put candle wax around it and heat the casting, the wax seeps down into the threads, I have tried this a couple times and seems to make things come loose easier. Worth a try.

Heat will do the job but remember that it takes time for heat to transfer thru steel.

Therefore, heat the top of the screw to a dull red and keep it a dull red for about 5 minutes. This should make the engaged threads also near dull red.

Let things cool for at least 5 minutes and then see if it will loosen with a reasonable amount of torque. If not, let it cool enough to apply penetrating oil----tap, etc.
