So I drug home a non-running DC this weekend (not sure why) to go with my SC, VAC, L and 830 I guess... but I did.. I will probably have the kid work on it. Anyway is the DC 6 volt or 12? (It did not have a battery) I noticed it has a magneto rather then a distributor? (which other then my L, I'm not to familiar with) On my SC and VAC I converted it to 12 with an alternator, they both had a distributor/coil... is it possible to convert a magneto to a 12 volt? (I guess assuming its 6).. I'm sure I will have more questions but this will get me started? Thank you. Serial number is 5520130DC

Kevin: Your DC was 6V when it left Racine. No voltage is connected to the Magneto. The wire connected to it is a grounding wire. The switch makes a connection to ground to shut the engine down. A Magneto generates it's own current.

Just to add to what John Saeli stated, they were negative ground 6 volt originally. Many people think all 6 volt systems are positive ground. Racine built machines were negative ground and Rock Island built were positive ground

old tractors converted to 12v will usually have a Alternator.

The answer is yes, 12 volts will work just fine, but you will need to have the generator converted to 12 volts or get a 12 volt alternator in order to charge up the battery. Keep in mind 12 volts will burn out 6 volt light bulbs though.

Kevin, if the cap is not broken I would disassemble the mag and clean up all the internal connections and make sure the points are grounding with an ohm meter, those mags are pretty good and there is no need to convert to coil ignition as they will run for years. For farm or show purposes they are just fine. I use battery ignition as I use more degrees of timing than can be got with a mag.
