Case Dozier

I have a D310G ser# 3025770 I need to what oil goes in the rear drive unit? And what year is this dozier? Where is a good place to buy parts? Thanks for any help. David

David,

My serial # book says 1965 . The trans

oil should be 90# mineral oil ( GL-1 ) and

do not use GL-5 . GL-1 is what was used in

the road ranger transmissions for years.

Whatever oil you use, it can't have any EP (extreme pressure) additives that come in GL-5 oil. They plug up the steering-brake bands and you'll lose your steering. Your Case has basically the same Clark transaxle as Oliver Cletrac HGS and OC3s. You need oil without phosphorus and zinc added.

I needed transmission oil this spring while in northern Michigan, for my Case 310G. Not only could I not find it anywhere, I couldn't even get anyone to order it. Not even NAPA or the local New Holland dealer. That's pretty silly. I wound up buying some 40W non-degergent motor oil at TSC, which is the same viscosity as 90W gear oil.

Here at home in cental NY, the local NAPA carries GL-1, as well as TSC (Tractor Supply Co.).

You can use trans-gear-oil rated GL-1 90W, or non-degergent 40 W motor oil, or what TSC sells as "90W Ford transmission oil".

Funny thing when I was in Michigan (in Alpena). I went to the New Holland dealer who happens to fix and sell a lot of old Ford tractors. Note they call for GL-1 oil. Yet, the service manager told me he'd never even heard of GL-1. They use 20W EP combo trans/hydraulic oil in all the tractors they work on. So much for going to a "old Ford tractor expert." And note that's 20W by the transmission oil rating, not engine. The ratings are different. 40W engine oil is the same viscosity as 90W gear-oil.

Definitly don't use GL-5.I did [mistakenly],lost all stearing control.I replaced w/ TSC 90W [per others recomendations on this blog] works great.I also use it in the final drives.I had to really look for it at TSC,it's called "Ford Transmission Oil".At the TSC I went to,it's sold in 2 Gal jugs.Worked on my 310G great.
