Case IH 5120

I'm interested in hearing what the thoughts are on a IH 5120 2 wheel drive open cab tractor. It's a diesel, 4900 hours with a Du All loader. Don't know much more about it, plan to go look at it next week. Never had one so would like any input that is available from you folks.

Not too many years ago I did some part time work for the local Case-IH dealer. Assembling implements, etc. Anytime a tractor was needed, he put me on what I remember as being a 5120. Very handy, smaller tractor with a loader and shuttle shift. I liked it.

I can't comment on a 5120 as we have never had one but we do have a 5140 and a 5230. Both tractors have been good machines. The 5140 we have doesn't have powershift but 5230 does. The only common problems I can think of is usually the parking brake warning alarm and sometimes idiot light will fail and tractor could get driven with the parking brake engaged, especially on open station units. Another thing is the gear shift linkage rod ball joints under the RH step have a tendency to freeze up in the joints and shear the socket into. If the braided fuel hoses from the fuel tank to under the seat have not been replaced with rubber lines, it will be on the to do list in the near future. Overall my experience with the Maxxum series has been they are pretty good. Like anything else with age they can have electrical gremlins if it wasn't cared for. I'd pay attention to any flashing warning lights, primarily the orange Transmission light upon inspection.

i have a 5230 and like the tractor but i had problems with shuttle shift lever itself being eclectic, i also have a c80 and it has mechanical shuttle shift i like better. never had the first problem. 5120 is a good tractor .
