Case IH 5220

Hello,

I'm looking at a 5220. It has a couple issues. 1) The diff lock switch doesn't lock the rear diff. 2) The 4WD switch doesn't disengage the 4WD. There is power to the front axle always. 3) The front differential doesn't. It spins both front wheels all the time.

So, is there a common electrical, switch, solenoid problem on these tractors or is this an usual problem?

Thanks for any help you might have.

Wayne

1, Does the light come on for the rear Diff lock when the switch is deprssed (and did the switch get pressed past the "safety")? It could be a fuse or relay - i"d check them first.

2, If the 4wd is always engaged that is most likely an electrical glitch, they need power to the solenoid to keep it in 2wd, there should be a fuse and a relay for the 4x4, make sure they are both ok (maybe swap the relay for another to see if that helps), if not i suspect a wire is broken or possibly the solenoid is no good - it"s located on top of the transmission under the seat in the cab (seat comes out-that"s the easiest way to get to it)

3, As far as i know there is no diff lock on the front axle... my 5240 doesn"t have one either, neither did the 5150 i drove years ago in England.

Just out of interest, do the hydraulic function correctly, nothing seem slow or weak??

Email is open if you want to email me...

Hi,

Thanks for the info and sorry to be so late in reply. I'm still digging out of the snow.

I spoke to the dealer that has this tractor and he's fixed the rear diff lock and the 4WD switch. He had it done within and hour or two of my being there, so it must have been an easy electrical connection like you say. He said the front differential works on hard pavement. It's just on snow and ice that there's not enough traction to make it work. Doesn't that make sense to you?

Hi Wayne

My 5240 does the same thing on snow... one front wheel spins a lot of the time... nothing we can do about it as far as i know...

good luck... Oli
