Case guy

I recently looked at a 1949 Lp La and I noticed it had the low compression 5844A head on it. I'm curious if this tractor was converted from gas to propane or if there's another reason why it would have that head on it. I'm sure there is someone else on here who would have a lot more knowledge about this than I would.

Don't know why it was changed, but if you are going to use it, it needs the propane head for correct power.
I converted a propane to gas and the propane head worked well on gas.

Case introduced propane equipment in the summer of 1951, so your LA has a retrofit unit that was probably purchased w/o the correct LP head. The LP head has smaller combustion chambers to raise compression so that the engine would have the same power as before the conversion. Don

Some have high compression pistons where as the entire diameter of the piston goes above the block. The low compression head is the only one that allows that

Do you know what the compression ratio would be if it had the pistons that go up into the head, I'm just curious if it would be the same if it had pistons that came up flush with the top of the block and had the Lp head.

I asked him and he said he has no idea what the compression ratio is. If you decide that you want a high compression head I have both the 5845A head and a 6386A head on hand
