Case-o-Matic in 831C

Calling all experts--I recently bought an 831C from my dad, who had rarely used the beast in the twelve years he owned it. The owner"s manual he turned over was for an 830 and made no mention of the Case-o-Matic transmission, the hood decal was for an 830, and so forth. In any case, my misunderstanding what I had here caused me to fill the Case-o-Matic housing to the top with tractor fluid (claims equivalency with Hy-Trans, John Deere J20, and so forth). By the time I"d figured out this housing was not continuous with the trans-hydraulic housing and gotten the fluid flushed out and refilled to a proper level, a perfectly functional transmission had taken to simply stopping in mid-field at high rpm"s. I"m assuming I"ve damaged a seal, O-ring, or something, as it didn"t really run long enough to wear out something like clutch facings. (I hope.) I have the correct manual coming, but can anyone tell me what I should be looking for? The tractor still fires up and moves fine when cold.

I cannot see how overfilling the com unit would do damage like that as it should just push the extra fluid out the filler/breather, what does the pressure gauge read when it stops moving? I have seen the flow spool get debris in it sticking it partly open, my 830 com leaks engine oil into the convertor housing, been that way for as long as I have had it never hurts anything being over full, maybe someone else will have some thoughts but I think you have a different issue, unless the fluid you used is foaming that could very well cause what you are describing

AS CN said, a prssure reading from the dash gage when the problem occours will help diagnose it.

The oil level should be checked upon shutdown immediately as a TC unit filled to full when cold will pump oil into the TC and be low in level when running after warmup.

Fill to level after the unit has been run but before the TC can drain back. A properly filled TC reservoir will check well overfull upon cold check after sitting overnite.

Thanks, guys--the pressure gauge, along with all the other gauges, is not functional. The fluid did not come out the filler neck, but did dribble out of the housing between COM and engine above where the normal level was supposed to be. The filter was not too bad, though the element was actually blown out sideways through the outlet gap in the mounting--can"t imagine what caused that--as opposed to the trans-hydraulic filter, which was completely clogged along with the take-up tube screen. I may have floated some garbage that got sucked into a relief valve or something higher up...

screw a gauge in at the clutch valve and see what you are getting for pressure, I am betting your flow control spool is stuck open to bypass oil, like mEl said it will tell us more what Is wrong

Will try the pressure gauge and let you all know how things turned out. I really suspect the spool valve is correct--I imagine in overfilling the case, I floated a bit of junk that got pulled in. Thanks all.

So--when all was said and done, it turned out the screen on the pickup tube of the Case-o-Matic pump was completely clogged with debris. Handy little devil to get at, as long as you don't mind pulling the pump housing... At any rate, the old 831 is up and running better than any time in the last twenty years or so... Thanks for the input, all.
