Case SC (gas)

helping a friend with his SC and I would like to know correct ignition timing, firing order, and valve clearances

This is from memory, but the timing should be 1342, as someone else said, look for the numbers cast into the block.

just checked serial number from the owner and the 53....... # shows it to be a 1949 and out of gut instinct when we had it running I gave the DISTRIBUTOR (which is a retro fit from the magneto days) a turn this way or that, it ran alot better --actually rearded it, gave it a little more high speed fuel and throttle response is now very good I still have concerns about valves being possible too tight. I like a LITTLE loose instead of tight so what do you all think????

vtjoe, the Firing order is 1-3-4-2.
Series D after 4607032, C, S, and VA
are equipped with magnetos which
have a 25 degree lag angle impulse
coupling. Series D prior 4607033, L,
and LA are equipped with a magneto
which has a 30 degree lag angle impulse
coupling. Series R is equipped
with a magneto which has a 35 degree
lag angle impulse coupling. Series V
is equipped with a magneto which has
a 16 degree lag angle impulse coupling
Series D after 4607032-S-V-VA
132. MAGNETO. To time the flange
type magneto as used on these engines,
first adjust breaker gap to the values
as listed below:
Breaker
Magneto Gap
Bosch .015
Case 4JMA .015
Case 41 .010
Fairbanks Morse .020
Remove No. 1 cylinder spark plug
and rotate engine crankshaft until air
is felt escaping from the spark plug
hole; then continue to rotate the
crankshaft until flywheel mark *'D"
on D series, "3/16 hole" on S series,
"DC 1&4/EX. CL." on V series, or 3/16
inch after "DC" mark on VA series U centered
in inspection port.

Series SC tractor engine fiywheel timing inspection port is located on right side of transmission housing clutch compartment, Magneto impulse trip point (1) is a 3/16 inch hole. Exhaust
valve closed mark "E*' is similar on series C, D, L, and LA flywheels
Adjust both inlet and exhaust valve
tappet (rocker arms) gap as follows
Tappet gap ,SC .010 Cold

wow! thanks for ALL the info Den N ...we will check the tappet gap and maybe verify .012 just to be safe, (and go back to .010 a little later), use the timing light to check my instinct on the hole timing! because this morning she started easy and sounded strong, still .... All of this took place after someone else rebuilt the motor and left retro distributor,,, LOOSE Thanks for all replys
