Case SC Ground

I know the Case SC has a negative ground on a 6 volt system. My question is about a regulator. I am putting on a used generator that I bought from a guy that has a regulator attached to it. How do I hook it up positive or negative ground. What do I look for on the regulator to tell me polarity? I know from experience, I mean a friends experience, that you can fry one fairly easily if it goes in the wrong way. I"m not sure what the other generator is from.

Ok, but i, I mean my friend just fried a voltage regulator on another machine because The neg terminal on the bat was used to ground the system. I took the whole thing to a alt gen repair shop and he said the reg was fried because of the reverse hook up. The gen was fine. so I replaced the reg on it. On this set up, I don't know where the gen reg combination came from, so I'm afraid of frying the reg on a case sc that has a neg ground, when the gen / reg that I want to put on might be from a system that had a positive ground. Does that make sense?

The generator works either way and the regulators are "usually" marked as to voltage and polarity on the underside. Search for polarizing, it involves sparking the armature tab and battery tab of the regulator before starting the tractor.

I have a 1950 SC with original 6v. VR is marked and is negative ground. Other 6v tractors I have are positive ground and so are their VRs
