Case shift lever/gears

I have a 1956 Case 310 utility. I have pulled the gear shifter lever housing out of the gears and cannot the shifter teeth and the gears to line back up to work properly. I am talking about the actual gear shifter lever and the (3) y-shaped things that change the gears underneath. It is held on top of the gear case with four bolts. anybody got a good way to get these lined back up. It seems to want to stay in reverse or either lock up the whole tractor.

I had the covers off of a couple of my 300's (311) about a year ago. Slide the shifter rings back and forth until they line up with the shifting forks. The gently lower the cover back into place. With a trouble light you should be able to watch the forks most of the way down. I have the triple range and was able to set the cover back on with no problem. Although it was much easier when my brother did one of them for me!!!

Make sure the lever and shift forks, "Y things", are in the neutral position. Move the sliding gear so that it spins freely on the shaft which should align the gear groove for the forks. Drop the cover and lever straight down. It helps if you have a spotter to see if the forks are lining up. Don't hold the shift lever to drop the cover, hold the cover itself to make sure the lever isn't moved during the stabing procedure.

If you let the lever move while stabing and the sliding gears move you could shift the fork rail under the gear case lip, not be properly stabbed and the cover will be near impossible to remove to realign. I have explained how to get past this if done in a previous post, don't ask how I know.
