Case Starter Bendix removal

Anybody remove the bendix gear/teeth from the armature? Looking for a starter and I cana find 9 tooth starters, if i can remove my 10 tooth bendix and place it on the new armature, viola!, new starter. Just need to be able to remove bendix.

Many years ago I got one of these Bendix drives in pieces off an old jeep Autolite starter that appeared nearly identical to the 300/300B Autolite starters.

I saved this page that I found on the internet, I think that is how I figured out how to reassemble it. Check your Bendix, see if the page is the same. There are precautions on pulling this type of Bendix off the armature shaft as it will lock up. I don't remember how to unlock it, if I ever did know.

Goggle info on 50's CJ jeep starters. Should find more recent and better info than I have here.

It has been awhile but I believe you will have to pull the armature out of the starter case by removing the long bolts holding the end cap and drive housing mated to the case. The bendix should be held captive by the drive housing and slide off the shaft after disassembly. Not a tough job, dealing with the brushes is the worst part.

Got it, thanks for the input. In Joe's first pic there is a diagram that is most similar to the case 300 round nose tractor's starter. The gear head is actually a cup, held on top of the bendix helical gear by a retaining ring recessed into the head underneath. Picking it out the gear head comes off. From here you can order a 91-06-1937 9 tooth starter (new from Gladiator) and swap heads to the 10 tooth and have a new starter. Haven't confirmed that the Gladiator will swap yet, mfg is returning call.

From here, you can pull the retaining "shaft collar" back on the armature shaft and access a second retaining ring. Remooving the second ring allows the bendix helical gear cylinder to be removed, the spring assembly is held on by another retaining ring under the spring, pull the spring back towards the armature to remove (I didn't remove this).

UPDATE: it worked well. I swapped the gear head of the old prestolite mz 4176 10 tooth with the 9 tooth Gladiator (R1201086 44-1014 441014 91-06-1937 91061937). The old starter was a 6v and the new one is 12v, but my system is already converted little consequence. The old starter had a helical cut groove shaft while hte new one had a ratchet head, but the gear heads are still interchangable. Pulled the Gladiator with the old gear head and the teeth on both the starter and flywheel were fine, the starter withdraws enough to clear the flywheel. Starts every time and is all new for $280 shipped.
