CASE STARTER

The picture below is the starter on my 1370 Case. Does anyone know the purpose of the bolt comeing out of the left end, the one with the nut and MELTED lock washer? The starter just stopped working all of a sudden. That bolt gets hot just holding the key on for 1 second. Obviously I've discovered this just a little to late. The starter is only two years old ( just past the warranty) and has hardly done any work as the tractor starts up immediatly when you turn the key. I haven't had it off yet but so far the dealership hasn't been any help over the phone.

I may be corrected on this but I believe that is the bolt that grounds the ground brushes to the starter endcap, I've seen some that have a long bolt there in large over the road trucks where they actually run Battery negative cables back to there. It could be that the bolt has just lost contact and overheated and is trying to ground as it should but is getting hot from the high resistance to current flow, try to take the nut off and brighten eveything up and reinstall it and see what happens, you havn't a lot to lose at this point.If your dealer won't help you, take it to an independant rebuilder , it should be able to be fixed relatively inexpensively unless an internal short caused the overheat condition.

I concur, that's grounding terminal for the brushes. On our 2470, which also uses the 504 engine, the ground cables from both batteries attaches to this bolt.

Train,Thats a ground for two of the brushes that is just grounded to the end cap.It had a bad ground at the end cap.If you could get the nut loose without the bolt turning.If it turns you can remove the end cap to repair it.You could attach a short cable on it and ground it to the engine block someplace.

Should be a ground strap going to the engine block. Every one that I've seen had one mounted as close to the starter as possible.
