CASE VAC ENGINE SLEEVE INSTALL

I am attempting to install a used set of engine sleeves in my Dad’s VAC14. I don’t have the money to buy a new engine rebuild kit.
I cleaned and wire brushed sleeves. Cleaned all of the fits in the engine block. I lubricated and installed o-rings on the sleeves. Installed sleeves in engine block using a wooden block and pry bar, but cannot get them to seat with .004 inch protruding. Best I can get is .012 inch. Never worked on a sleeved engine. Is .004 absolute??? Stumped

If you pulled the sleeves out and the rings survived, then you did it correctly. However, I would recommend new seals because depending what you lube them with the first time , they may have swollen which will greatly increase your chances of cutting them on the way back in on a second attempt. There is no way to tell if the seal is cut once the sleeve is seated.

Check your protrusion first without any seals , and mark their position in the block so you can put them in the same position that you measured them.

If they are still sticking up too high with seals installed, the head will push them down to the correct height.... you already measured and marked them so you know the protrusion will be right when the head is torqued.

i used a new set of seals and removed the residue of lubricant from the sleeves. Ready for a reinstall. Thank you for your input.

You are using used sleeves. Clean-- clean flange and bottom of sleeve bevel and block groove and block oring grooves, hand bolt sleeve into block and get your .004 protruding. If not .004 clean out or add a shim to get .004. Number the sleeves to go back in same hole? Do not break or crack that sleeve top flange! If all is good, put orings into the correct block grooves. Do not lub orings with petroleum product, use Dawn dish soap. Lub sleeve bottom and orings and slide into its hole with your hands and a block of wood. Keep same piston in its same liner! Fit your rings to its liner? Rings on piston, piston into liner.

I’m ready to add oil To the crankcase. Best oil for this. Manual say SAE 20 wt. Is this suppose to be HD (high detergent). Seems automotive stores carry synthetic oil. Any suggestion?
